Pune School Initiates Legal Proceedings Following Disruptive Fee Protest

The Bishop's Education Society in Pune has taken decisive legal action following a disruptive protest over fee increases at its Undri campus. In a circular issued to parents on Friday, the school management announced it has identified individuals responsible for alleged trespass, disruption of operations, and privacy violations during the incident on April 15.

Details of the April 15 Incident

The school described the April 15 event as a serious breach of protocol that directly interfered with normal functioning. According to the institution's account, a small group of parents accompanied by unidentified individuals entered the Undri school campus without proper authorization. The protesters assembled outside the counseling department and main office, creating what the school termed a "hostile atmosphere" for students.

The protest centered on complaints about a recent fee increase that parents claimed was unauthorized and lacked transparency. While the school had reportedly implemented a 15% fee hike, protesters alleged the actual increase amounted to nearly 47%. Additional grievances included overcrowded classrooms and insufficient consultation with parents regarding the fee adjustment.

Impact on Students and Privacy Concerns

The circular emphasized the distressing impact of the protest, particularly on children attending counseling sessions at the time. "The aggressive and unwarranted behaviour had a distressing impact," the management stated. "Children attending counselling sessions were particularly affected as the disruption took place just outside the room."

The school also raised serious concerns about privacy violations during the incident. Management flagged unauthorized recording and circulation of videos showing the principal and staff members. According to the circular, this footage was recorded without consent and subsequently shared on media platforms with what the institution described as "intent to harm and defame the institution's reputation."

Legal Action and Security Measures

Following an internal investigation, the education society has initiated both civil and criminal proceedings against those identified as responsible. "We have identified the people at fault after internal investigation," the circular stated. "Consequently, civil and criminal proceedings have been initiated. We intend to pursue the matter to the fullest extent of the law."

The school management emphasized that student safety and privacy are non-negotiable priorities that warranted strict legal response. In response to the incident, the institution has implemented enhanced security protocols across all campuses:

  • Restricted access requiring prior appointments for campus entry
  • Designated official communication channels as the sole method for raising concerns
  • Warning that future unauthorized assemblies, protests, threatening behavior, or non-consensual recording will result in immediate police intervention

Management's Stance on Parent Cooperation

Despite the legal actions, the school management expressed continued appreciation for parental cooperation and stressed the fundamental importance of maintaining a safe, stable educational environment. The circular reiterated the institution's commitment to constructive dialogue through proper channels while making clear that disruptive behavior would not be tolerated.

The Bishop's Education Society's response highlights the growing tension between educational institutions and parents over fee structures, while establishing clear boundaries regarding campus conduct and privacy protections for both students and staff members.
