Rajasthan Education Department Reverses Longstanding Ban on Guide Books in Schools
In a significant policy shift, the Rajasthan Department of Secondary Education has officially lifted its nine-year prohibition on guide books in schools across the state. This decision marks a dramatic reversal from a period when these supplementary materials were treated as taboo, with teachers facing potential disciplinary action if students were found carrying them.
Court Order Prompts Immediate Policy Change
The department's transformation came through an order issued Monday from the office of the Director of Secondary Education in Bikaner. The directive explicitly withdraws earlier instructions "with immediate effect," citing a February 12, 2026 order from the Rajasthan High Court as the primary catalyst for this change.
According to official documents, the decision followed extensive consultations with the Legal Cell and relevant education officials. The department had originally implemented the ban to ensure strict adherence to prescribed curriculum and prevent guide books from being used as substitutes for official textbooks.
End of Disciplinary Actions Against Teachers
A senior official from the education directorate in Bikaner clarified the practical implications: "With this order, there will be no disciplinary action on teachers if guide books are found with students in school. Till now, if such books were discovered, the teacher was held answerable. Now students can freely use these resources for additional academic support."
The new directive specifically rescinds earlier orders dated November 6, 2023, and March 13, 2018, which had enforced the controversial ban across Rajasthan's educational institutions.
Educational Benefits and Quality Assurance
Education officials have highlighted multiple advantages stemming from this policy reversal:
- Enhanced examination preparation resources for students
- Access to supplementary teaching materials for educators
- Additional academic support beyond standard textbooks
However, authorities emphasize that monitoring mechanisms and educational guidelines will remain in place to ensure maintained quality standards across Rajasthan's school system. The department aims to balance increased resource accessibility with continued curriculum integrity.
This development follows legal challenges against the original ban, culminating in the high court's intervention. The policy change represents a notable evolution in Rajasthan's educational approach, potentially influencing how supplementary materials are integrated into learning environments statewide.
