110 Kalbelia Women Transform Lives Through Night School in Rajasthan
Rajasthan Night School Empowers 110 Kalbelia Women

In the serene pathways of Berwai village within Roopangarh tehsil, Rajasthan, an extraordinary transformation occurs each evening as darkness falls. More than 110 women, predominantly young married individuals from the Kalbelia community who missed formal schooling opportunities, now assemble to learn reading, writing, and crucial life skills.

Healthcare Education Brings Dignity and Confidence

The night school program features an auxiliary nursing midwife (ANM) named Sulochana who conducts specialized classes focusing on women's health, hygiene practices, reproductive care, family planning methods, and mental wellbeing. This initiative began in 2023 with 75 participants and has since expanded to encompass over 110 learners across Berwai and neighboring Parbatsar.

"When I work with women from nomadic backgrounds who never attended school, I recognize their urgent need for healthcare and hygiene knowledge," shared Sulochana. "Educating them about health and reproductive care transcends ordinary lessons—it represents a significant step toward dignity and self-assurance. My greatest satisfaction comes from witnessing them ask questions, make informed decisions, and understand that their wellbeing truly matters."

From Basic Literacy to Comprehensive Life Skills

Sarju, a coordinator with Manthan Sanstha—the NGO supporting this educational endeavor—explained the program's evolution. "We commenced with fundamental literacy skills including reading, writing, and arithmetic. progressively, we incorporated sessions on health awareness, family planning approaches, and cervical cancer prevention."

The program's impact extends far beyond academic learning. Sanju, a participant from Berwai, expressed her personal growth: "Previously, we couldn't even sign our names properly. Now we comprehend how to maintain our health effectively and make better life choices."

Creating Independent Women Leaders

After two years of operation, Berwai's women's night school stands as a powerful example of how education and awareness can fundamentally change lives, particularly for communities historically excluded from formal learning systems.

Teja Ram Mali of Manthan Sanstha highlighted the broader empowerment outcomes: "This school serves as a platform where women not only learn literacy skills but also establish small businesses, generate personal income, and experience genuine independence. Through close collaboration with these women, we've observed that tribal and nomadic women learn rapidly and possess inherent leadership qualities."

The program demonstrates that when educational opportunities reach marginalized communities, particularly women who have faced multiple barriers, the resulting transformation benefits entire families and villages, creating ripple effects of positive change throughout the region.
