SCB Medical College Students Rally Against Administrative Changes Post-Fire

The UG Students' Union of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has launched a strong opposition to recent administrative decisions by the government, following a fire incident at the institution. On Thursday, the union publicly condemned the removal of Dr Lucy Das from her positions as dean and principal, as well as the transfer of Dr N C Mohapatra, head of the orthopaedics department, to PRM MCH in Baripada.

Students Decry Unjust Actions Amid Academic Session

Addressing a press conference at SCB, union representatives asserted that the professors had no connection to the fire incident, yet the government proceeded with their removal and transfer. "If the government does not revoke this decision, we will hold widespread agitation on this matter," warned the students, highlighting their readiness for protest.

Sanat Satyajit, president of the UG Students' Union, emphasized the academic role of the dean, stating, "Dean is the academic head of the institution and is primarily responsible for academic affairs, curriculum standards, research, and student welfare. Therefore, holding the dean responsible for the fire incident is a grave injustice and an attempt to shield those who are accountable."

Impact on Education and Patient Care

The union argued that removing Dr Das in the middle of the academic session, particularly during final MBBS examinations, is unacceptable as it disrupts the academic atmosphere and jeopardizes student futures. Additionally, they expressed concern over the transfer of Dr Mohapatra, an eminent surgeon known for expertise in joint replacement and complex surgeries, which they believe will negatively affect both medical education and patient care at this critical time.

Demands for Immediate Action and Transparency

The students have put forth a series of demands to address the situation:

  • Immediate and unconditional revocation of the order removing the dean and principal.
  • Reinstatement of Dr Lucy Das to her rightful position.
  • Cancellation of the transfer order for Dr N C Mohapatra.
  • A high-level, impartial, and transparent inquiry involving fire services, the engineering wing, the works department, and all concerned authorities.
  • Strict and exemplary action against those responsible for the SCB fire accident.

In their press statement, the union urged the state government to "reconsider its decision immediately and uphold justice, transparency, and the dignity of this institution by revoking all such orders without delay."

The protest underscores growing tensions between students and administrative bodies in educational institutions, calling for greater accountability and fairness in handling crises.
