Balasore Tragedy: 11-Year-Old Dies as Concrete Slab Falls in School
School Safety Failure: Boy Killed by Falling Slab in Balasore

A tragic accident at a government primary school in Odisha's Balasore district has claimed the life of an 11-year-old student, sparking outrage over safety lapses. The incident occurred on Thursday when a concrete slab installed on the school campus suddenly collapsed on the child.

The Fatal Midday Break Incident

The victim, identified as Prahlad Dhal, was a Class V student at Badas Primary School in the Baliapal block. During the break for the midday meal, Prahlad was playing with his friends on the school grounds. A heavy concrete slab, which had been installed near the school approximately three years ago as part of construction work for a new building, fell on him without warning.

The impact caused critical injuries. Teachers and staff immediately rushed the boy to the nearby Baliapal IDCO Community Health Centre. As his condition continued to deteriorate, he was referred to the Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital (FMMCH) in Balasore. Despite all efforts, Prahlad, son of Pramod Dhal from Kenduadia village, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday evening.

Community Outrage and Road Blockade

The shocking death triggered immense grief and anger among parents and local residents. They gathered to protest, alleging severe negligence and a complete absence of basic safety measures on the school campus. The community claimed that construction-related structures were left unsecured and unattended for years, posing a constant danger to the lives of young students.

On Friday, the anger spilled onto the streets as locals blocked the road in front of the school. Their demands were clear and urgent:

  • Fair compensation for the bereaved family.
  • A thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
  • Accountability for officials responsible for the safety oversight.
  • Strict and immediate enforcement of safety norms in all schools.

Block Education Officer Jagabandhu Jena confirmed that an inquiry into the incident has been conducted and a report submitted to the District Education Officer for necessary action.

Official Response and Compensation

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of young life. He extended his condolences to the family of Prahlad Dhal. The Chief Minister announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF).

This heartbreaking incident has put a harsh spotlight on the state of safety infrastructure in government schools, raising urgent questions about the maintenance of premises and the protocols followed during ongoing construction work near areas frequented by children.
