Sister of Deceased Dental Student Firmly Rejects Loan App Pressure Theory

In a significant development in the tragic case of Nithin Raj's death, his sister Nikita Raj has categorically rejected suggestions that threats from a digital loan application were a primary reason behind her brother's demise. Speaking to reporters from Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, Nikita emphasized that the family will not allow the investigation to be diverted by what she called the "loan app issue."

Clarifying Financial Details and Rejecting Speculation

Nikita Raj provided crucial clarifications about the financial aspects surrounding her brother's case. She stated unequivocally that Nithin had not taken loans amounting to lakhs of rupees, countering circulating narratives about substantial financial pressure. According to her account, the loan in question was relatively modest and was not obtained in the name of any teacher involved in the case.

"The recovery agent threats from loan apps are being exaggerated," Nikita asserted, directly challenging theories that such pressure could have been a determining factor in her brother's death. Her statements come amid police revelations that teacher Latha had indeed received multiple calls from loan app recovery agents, a matter that was reportedly discussed with the college principal.

Police Findings and Financial Pressure Details

Police investigation has revealed that Nithin Raj himself contacted the loan agency staff, requesting them to stop disturbing the teacher. Official reports indicate he had taken a loan of approximately Rs 14,000, of which he had repaid Rs 1,000. However, recovery agents were allegedly pressuring him to repay Rs 18,000 within a single month, creating additional stress alongside the harassment he was reportedly facing at the dental college.

Political Response and Family Support

Meanwhile, the Congress party has stepped forward with tangible support for the grieving family. On Tuesday, former minister and UDF candidate for Aruvikkara, V S Sivakumar, personally handed over a cheque for Rs 5 lakh to Nithin's family. This assistance aligns with the party's promise to help build a house for the family, who currently reside in rented accommodation.

Opposition leader V D Satheesan, who visited the family on Monday, confirmed that the remaining amount would be provided when construction actually begins. During his visit, Satheesan strongly demanded a high-level investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nithin's death, insisting that all responsible parties must be brought before the law.

Caste-Based Harassment Allegations Take Center Stage

The core of the family's concerns appears to be allegations of sustained caste-based harassment. Nithin Raj, a native of Nedumangad, reportedly died by suicide following what his family and supporters describe as systematic harassment by teachers at the Kannur Dental College in Anjarakandy. These allegations have now become the focal point of demands for justice.

Medical Association Demands Murder Charges

Adding weight to these demands, the All Foreign Medical Doctors and Parents Association (AFMDPA) has issued a powerful statement calling for murder charges against all those responsible for Nithin's death. The association argues that sustained harassment—including both mental and physical abuse with caste-based elements—directly led to his suicide, constituting culpable homicide.

In their strongly-worded statement, AFMDPA criticized the college management for what they described as "insensitive behavior," alleging that even fellow students were prevented from attending funeral rites. The association has demanded substantial compensation for the victim's family from the college authorities.

Broader Reforms Demanded in Medical Education

Beyond this specific case, AFMDPA has called for systemic reforms across Kerala's medical education institutions. The association has urged both the National Medical Commission and the state government to conduct comprehensive inspections of all medical colleges in Kerala. They have specifically advocated for the creation of a dedicated commission to address student grievances and ensure strict action against guilty parties, including college administrators and faculty members.

The case continues to develop as multiple stakeholders—from family members to political leaders to professional associations—maintain pressure for a thorough investigation that addresses what they believe to be the root causes of this tragedy, rather than what they consider peripheral issues like loan app pressures.
