In a significant push to bolster public access to knowledge and reading resources, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday inaugurated nine newly constructed library buildings across the Trichy district. The inauguration was conducted through a video conference, marking a key expansion of educational infrastructure in both urban and rural constituencies of the region.
Details of the New Library Infrastructure
The ambitious library development project was executed at an estimated total cost of ₹1.98 crore. Each of the nine buildings was constructed with an investment of ₹22 lakh. The new facilities are strategically spread across various assembly constituencies to ensure wide reach. The list includes an annexe building at the District Central Library under the Trichy east constituency.
Furthermore, new branch library buildings have been established at Athavathur in Srirangam constituency, Ramji Nagar, Pichandarkovil in Manachanallur constituency, and Pannapatti in Manapparai constituency. To specifically serve rural communities, new rural library buildings have been set up at Devimangalam, Poonampalayam, Krishnasamudram in Thiruverumbur constituency, and Ellakudi.
Additional Funding for Furnishing and Resources
Beyond the construction costs, the government has sanctioned an additional ₹36 lakh to equip these libraries fully. This supplementary fund, amounting to ₹4 lakh per library, is designated for the procurement of essential items. These include furniture, computer-related equipment, and a fresh stock of books, ensuring the libraries are functional and resource-rich from day one.
Local Ceremony and Official Participation
A local function was held at the District Central Library in Trichy to mark the occasion. District Collector V Saravanan participated actively in this event. As part of the traditional ceremony, he lit the ceremonial lamp and conducted a thorough inspection of the new facility, underscoring the local administration's commitment to the project's success.
This initiative represents a concrete step by the state government to strengthen the public library network, promoting literacy and continuous learning among citizens of all ages. By focusing on both urban centers and remote rural areas, the project aims to bridge the access gap to educational resources and create community hubs for knowledge.
