Tamil Nadu School Education Department Issues Directive for RTE Seat Calculation
The school education department in Tamil Nadu has issued a crucial circular to private matriculation schools across the state, mandating them to commence the calculation of available admission seats under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year. This process is set to begin tomorrow, on April 2, with schools required to submit their calculations to the chief education officers of their respective districts by April 7.
Key Provisions and Calculation Methodology
Under the provisions of the Right to Education Act, a significant 25% of total seats in each private school will be reserved for students from special disadvantaged categories and the economically weaker section. The total number of seats to be allocated will be determined based on the entry-level student strength recorded in the state's Education Management Information System (EMIS) portal for the 2025-2026 academic year.
This data, specifically for LKG and Class I admissions, must be published in the respective school's EMIS login by April 6, 2026. Schools have been instructed to prominently display these calculated numbers on their notice boards on April 7, ensuring transparency. Furthermore, the directorate of private schools has announced that the same information will be officially published on the dedicated portal rte.tnschools.gov.in on April 15.
Eligibility Criteria and Application Process
The circular outlines clear eligibility criteria for admission. For entry into LKG, children must have been born between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023. Similarly, for Class I admissions, the birth date must fall between August 1, 2019, and July 31, 2020.
Parents seeking admission under the RTE quota can apply through two primary channels. They may submit their applications online via the official TN schools website during the window from April 20 to May 18. Alternatively, applications can be submitted directly at the respective schools. It is mandatory for schools to provide an acknowledgment receipt to all applicants upon submission.
Admission Timeline and Prioritization
The admission process will culminate in a draw of lots scheduled for May 22, with the final list of selected students to be published on May 29. The circular emphasizes a prioritization framework for certain vulnerable groups. Children of orphans, those affected by HIV, transpersons, sanitation workers, and persons with disabilities will be given priority in admissions before the general draw of lots is conducted.
For applicants under the economically weaker section category, proof of annual income not exceeding ₹2 lakh is required. The document verification process will be conducted online between April 22 and May 19. Applicants will receive SMS notifications regarding their eligibility status or if any documents are missing. Any missing documents must be submitted before 5 PM on May 19 to complete the application.
Positive Reception from Private School Associations
The directive has been welcomed by private school associations across Tamil Nadu. M. Arumugam, president of the federation of private school associations, expressed relief at the reversion to a structured application process. He highlighted that last year, the government did not invite fresh applications due to cited lack of funds, instead instructing schools to transfer already admitted eligible students to the RTE slab—a process described as arduous for the institutions.
"Reverting to this formal process will significantly assist schools in selecting eligible and deserving candidates in a transparent and organized manner," stated Arumugam, underscoring the importance of the renewed procedure for both schools and aspiring students.
This comprehensive initiative by the Tamil Nadu school education department aims to streamline RTE admissions, ensuring equitable access to quality education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds while providing clear guidelines and timelines for all stakeholders involved.
