From Tribal Hamlet to Atomic Dreams: Anjali Banothu's Journey
In the remote tribal hamlet of Suryapet district, Telangana, a 17-year-old girl is defying all odds to pursue an ambitious career in nuclear physics. Anjali Banothu, who scored an exceptional 991 out of 1,000 marks in her second-year Intermediate examinations, now aspires to become a nuclear physicist—a first not just for her family but for her entire thanda (tribal settlement).
Overcoming Adversity Through Academic Excellence
Raised by her mother Kranthi, a daily wage labourer who earns between ₹200 and ₹400 per day, Anjali has faced significant financial hardship since losing her father at age five. Despite these challenges, she has maintained unwavering focus on her studies, completing her schooling from Class 5 to 10 at a government high school in Thungathurthi before securing admission to the Centre of Excellence in Warangal through an entrance test.
"I want to study hard and get a good job so I can support my mother," Anjali told TOI, reflecting on her motivation. Her mother Kranthi, 40, recalls the difficulties of raising two children alone after her husband's tragic death from a workplace accident about a decade ago. "All I want is to see my children succeed," she said, highlighting the family's limited resources with just half an acre of land in their village.
The Spark of Scientific Ambition
Anjali's interest in nuclear science ignited in Class 9 after studying a lesson on atomic energy. "Since then, I have wanted to become a nuclear physicist," she explained. Her specific academic goals include studying materials science and metallurgical engineering, with aspirations to eventually work at the prestigious Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
Currently preparing for entrance examinations, Anjali has already taken the JEE Main and expresses confidence about qualifying for JEE Advanced. She aims to secure admission at a government institution like IIT or IISER, recognizing that private education remains financially unattainable for her family.
