Exam Scheduling Confusion at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya Disrupts BCom Students

A scheduling mix-up at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Indore during the BCom third-year public finance examination resulted in a small group of students missing their crucial paper on Wednesday. The incident highlights communication gaps in academic administration, despite the university's efforts to disseminate updated information.

Details of the Scheduling Error

The examination was originally scheduled for March 16 but was rescheduled to April 8 due to adjustments linked with the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). The revised timing was set for 7 am to 10 am. However, eight students arrived at the exam center at 11 am, following the earlier schedule, and found themselves unable to sit for the paper.

University officials have stated that the revised date and timing were clearly updated on the official website and communicated to affiliated colleges through official channels. Controller of Examinations Ashesh Tiwari emphasized that the confusion largely stemmed from students not checking the updated details carefully. "The schedule was properly circulated, but some students failed to note the change," he noted.

University's Response and Broader Context

In a compassionate move, the university has allowed the affected students to reappear for the examination within two days, thereby preventing significant academic loss. Tiwari provided context by mentioning that around 45,000 students are appearing for third-year undergraduate exams this session, including nearly 16,000 B.Com candidates. Only a handful faced this particular issue, indicating it was an isolated incident.

This was not an isolated case, however. A similar situation was reported just a day earlier, when approximately 20 students across B.Com, BA, and B.Sc courses missed their exams due to timing confusion. These repeated incidents have raised concerns about the effectiveness of communication protocols.

Preventive Measures for the Future

While the university has reiterated that all updates were properly communicated, it has now directed colleges to take additional steps to ensure exam timings are shared more explicitly with students. This directive aims to avoid such lapses in the future and enhance the reliability of the examination process.

The university's proactive approach in allowing re-examination demonstrates a commitment to student welfare, but it also underscores the need for improved coordination between administrative bodies and students. As the exam season continues, stakeholders are urged to double-check schedules to prevent further disruptions.
