UP Board Issues Stern Warning Against Unauthorized Textbook Publishers
Ahead of the 2026-27 academic session, authorities at the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Board have issued a firm warning targeting unauthorized publishers attempting to distribute unapproved textbooks across more than 29,000 affiliated schools. This move aims to curb the circulation of illicit educational materials and protect students from exploitation.
Misleading Practices and Violations Flagged
Board officials have highlighted several concerning instances where certain publishers allegedly misled students and parents by selling books under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) name without proper authorization. Additionally, some publishers spread confusion by falsely claiming that UP Board schools had the freedom to prescribe any textbook of their choice. Officials have clarified that this claim is entirely incorrect and violates established educational norms.
Official Notification and Legal Stance
In a notification issued on January 8, the board specified that only textbooks published by authorized publishers would be permitted in government, aided, and self-financed schools. Students cannot be forced to purchase expensive, unauthorized textbooks or guidebooks, and strict legal action will be initiated against those who violate these rules, according to board secretary Bhagwati Singh.
The board's authority in this matter has been reinforced by the high court, which recently dismissed petitions filed by certain publishers challenging its powers. The court observed that the board holds the exclusive right to determine textbooks for high school and intermediate classes. It further noted that any publisher found violating laws could face significant legal consequences.
Combating Misinformation and Rumors
Beyond textbook issues, the board has also sought action against those spreading misinformation regarding examinations. Acting on a report from the board, Inspector General (Law and Order) LR Kumar directed the police commissionerate to take steps against YouTube channels disseminating false claims, including rumors of question paper leaks. This underscores the board's broader effort to maintain integrity and trust in the educational system.
The UP Board's proactive measures highlight a commitment to ensuring fair and standardized education while safeguarding students from financial and academic harm.
