A solemn candlelight march illuminated the campus of Panjab University in Chandigarh on Friday, commemorating the death anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. The event, organized by the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA), saw significant participation from the university community.
March Highlights Ambedkar's Legacy
The procession commenced from the Student Centre and wound its way through the campus, culminating at the University Market. A diverse group of students, research scholars, and members of various student organizations joined the march, paying homage to Babasaheb's immense contributions.
Participants reflected on Dr. Ambedkar's pivotal role in drafting the Constitution and his lifelong crusade for social reform, education, equality, and rights for marginalised communities. The march served as a powerful reminder of his enduring ideals in the face of contemporary challenges.
Allegations of Administrative Indifference
Beyond remembrance, the gathering became a platform for raising pressing concerns. Representatives of the ASA leveled serious allegations against the university administration. They asserted that reservation norms are not being implemented in key decision-making bodies like the Senate and the Syndicate, as well as in recruitment processes.
Further grievances included reported delays in the processing of post-matric scholarships for students and cited incidents of caste-based remarks on campus, pointing to an environment that needed urgent addressal.
Calls for Action and Continued Agitation
The student body did not mince words in assigning blame. The organization held both the Central and Punjab state governments responsible for what they described as administrative apathy towards these critical issues.
The ASA issued a clear warning, stating that their agitation would persist until reservation norms are fully enforced within all university bodies. The candle march, therefore, was not just a memorial but a beacon for ongoing struggle and a demand for accountability, keeping Dr. Ambedkar's fight for social justice alive on the university grounds.
