Andhra University Commemorates a Century of Academic Excellence
Visakhapatnam witnessed a historic celebration as Andhra University, hailed by former vice-chancellors as a steadfast vehicle of knowledge, marked its centenary with a significant panel discussion on Monday. The event, themed "AU at 100 – From Legacy to Global Impact," brought together academic luminaries to reflect on the institution's journey and future trajectory.
Dual Sessions Explore Global and Local Educational Landscapes
The centenary program featured two comprehensive sessions designed to address critical aspects of modern higher education. The first session, titled "Universities in the Global Knowledge Ecosystem – Innovation, Research, and Industry Collaboration," was expertly moderated by former AU vice-chancellor Prof. G.S.N. Raju. Esteemed panelists included Prof VSRK Prasad, Prof GVR Srinivasa Rao, Prof S Ramakrishna Rao, Prof G Nageswara Rao, Prof V Satyanarayana, and Prof V Kesava Rao, who collectively examined how universities can enhance their global presence through strategic partnerships and innovative practices.
The second session, "State Public Universities – Key Challenges and the Way Forward," was moderated by Prof V Balamohan Das. This discussion featured insights from Prof A Rajendra Prasad, Prof CV Raghavulu, Prof AV Prasad Rao, Prof SV Sudhakar, Prof M Jagannadharao, Prof KR Rajani, Prof K Nirupama Rani, and Prof R Sudarshan Rao, focusing on the unique obstacles faced by public institutions and potential solutions for sustainable growth.
Leadership Reflections on AU's Legacy and Future
AU vice-chancellor Prof GP Rajashekar expressed immense pride in the university's remarkable achievement of producing numerous academicians who have served as vice-chancellors across India. He emphasized the mounting challenges confronting government universities, particularly in an era of rapid globalization, and stressed the urgent need for Indian institutions to assert themselves more prominently on the world stage through academic excellence and research innovation.
Prof GSN Raju provided historical context by recalling AU's distinguished founding by Sir CR Reddy and its subsequent growth under the visionary leadership of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He passionately urged universities to maintain an unwavering focus on high-quality teaching, groundbreaking research, technological innovation, and meaningful industry collaboration. Prof Raju reaffirmed that education remains one of the most powerful tools for personal transformation and societal advancement.
Prof V Balamohan Das highlighted AU's unparalleled record of producing an astonishing 50 vice-chancellors, a feat unmatched by any other university in India. He noted the extraordinary continuity provided by the institution's first three vice-chancellors – Sir CR Reddy, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and VS Krishna – who collectively served for over three decades, establishing a strong foundation for academic leadership.
