Canara College in Mangaluru Achieves Autonomous Status from UGC

In a significant development for higher education in Karnataka, Canara College located on Jail Road in Mangaluru has been officially granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This prestigious recognition will come into effect from the upcoming academic year, marking a new chapter for the five-decade-old institution that currently educates 1,569 students.

Historical Background and Academic Excellence

Established in 1973 by the Canara High School Association, the college has maintained a strong affiliation with Mangalore University throughout its history. The institution boasts an impressive academic record, having secured 135 university ranks over its 53 years of operation. This includes 12 ranks achieved during the 2023–24 and 2024–25 academic sessions alone.

The college holds an ‘A’ grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.2. Its academic strength is further supported by a dedicated team of 85 qualified lecturers and administrative staff members who contribute to its educational mission.

What Autonomy Means for the Institution

According to college correspondent M Jagannath Kamath, achieving autonomous status represents a major milestone that will provide significant academic freedom. This autonomy will allow the college greater flexibility in curriculum design, examination patterns, and evaluation methodologies, enabling more responsive and innovative educational approaches.

Despite this new independence, degrees will continue to be awarded by Mangalore University, carrying the distinguished designation of ‘Autonomous College.’ The institution has emphasized that its autonomous operations will function under the established guidelines of the UGC, state government, and the university framework.

Quality assurance mechanisms will remain robust through the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and regular academic audits, ensuring that educational standards are maintained and enhanced under the new autonomous structure.

New Job-Oriented Programs to Meet Industry Demands

In alignment with evolving industry requirements and employment trends, Canara College has proposed the introduction of three new high-demand, job-oriented undergraduate programs:

  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Logistics
  • Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) in Data Analytics
  • Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Business Data Analytics

These programs are specifically designed to equip students with practical skills and knowledge that directly correspond to current market needs, enhancing their employability upon graduation.

Leadership Perspective on the Achievement

During a press briefing on Wednesday, CHSA president D Vasudev Kamath expressed pride in this accomplishment, highlighting the college's longstanding commitment to quality education since its establishment. The autonomous status is viewed as both recognition of past achievements and an opportunity for future innovation in teaching and learning methodologies.

The transition to autonomous status represents a strategic move to enhance the college's academic offerings while maintaining its strong foundation of excellence. This development is expected to benefit current and future students through more tailored educational experiences and improved career preparation in competitive fields.
