In a significant move towards fostering an inclusive educational environment, Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) in Lucknow has announced plans to establish four major new facilities on its campus. These initiatives are specifically designed to enhance the daily lives and academic experiences of students with disabilities.
High-Tech Digital Lab for Custom Artificial Limbs
The university is setting up a state-of-the-art digital technology laboratory. This facility will leverage modern 3D printing and scanning technology to create high-quality, custom-fitted artificial limbs. Professor Sanjay Singh, the Vice Chancellor of DSMNRU, explained that the process will involve scanning the feet of individuals with disabilities. The digital data will then be used to design and manufacture prosthetics with precise modifications, ensuring a perfect fit and improved mobility.
Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Sports Support
Beyond basic mobility, the university is focusing on holistic rehabilitation and athletic encouragement. A dedicated aesthetic prosthetics rehabilitation service will be created to produce cosmetically natural-looking artificial limbs. This service aims to manufacture prosthetic fingers, noses, and ears, helping individuals overcome the psychological impact associated with amputation by restoring a natural appearance.
Furthermore, to promote sports among persons with disabilities, DSMNRU will establish a sports prosthetics facility. This centre will develop and provide high-performance prosthetic limbs, such as advanced 'blade runner' prosthetics. The goal is to enable and encourage students to participate actively in sports at the state, national, and even international levels.
Preventive Wheelchair Rehabilitation Service
Recognising the health challenges posed by prolonged wheelchair use, the university will also introduce a specialised wheelchair rehabilitation service. This facility will tackle common issues like pressure ulcers through a scientific approach. Using a pressure mapping machine, the service will measure the pressure exerted on different parts of the body while seated in a wheelchair. Based on this analysis, it will provide customised adaptations, including specially designed sitting cushions, to distribute pressure evenly and prevent injuries.
The establishment of these four facilities—the digital limb lab, the aesthetic prosthetics centre, the sports prosthetics unit, and the wheelchair service—marks a comprehensive step by DSMNRU Lucknow. It underscores the institution's commitment to not just educating but also empowering its students with disabilities by integrating cutting-edge technology and tailored support directly on campus.
