In a significant move to bolster security on campus, Delhi University, in collaboration with the Delhi Police, inaugurated its first dedicated pink police booth at Miranda House College on Monday. An integrated police booth was also set up near the Faculty of Arts.
Boosts Security in High-Footfall North Campus
The initiative was officially launched by Satish Golchha, the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, and Yogesh Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University. Senior officials from both the police force and the university were present at the inauguration ceremony held at the Vice Regal Lodge.
The decision to establish these booths stems from the need to secure the bustling North Campus area, which sees a massive daily influx of students and faculty from across India, including a large number of women. The pink booth has been strategically placed at a corner of Miranda House College facing Patel Chest. This location is considered sensitive due to the proximity of two prominent women's colleges: Miranda House and Daulat Ram College.
Mini Control Rooms with Real-Time Monitoring
Both newly inaugurated booths are designed to function as mini control rooms. They are equipped with modern infrastructure to ensure effective surveillance and rapid response. Key facilities include:
- CCTV surveillance systems
- Computers and wireless communication sets
- Capability for real-time monitoring of the area
The integrated police booth has been established on Chhatra Marg near the Arts Faculty, a known hotspot for student protests and demonstrations, allowing for immediate police presence during such events.
Round-the-Clock Assistance for Women
The pink booth holds special significance as it will be manned 24 hours a day by women police personnel. It aims to be a one-stop point for female students and staff, offering a range of essential services:
- Lodging of e-FIRs (Electronic First Information Reports)
- Filing cyber complaints
- Reporting lost items
- Providing immediate assistance to women in distress
Speaking at the event, Police Commissioner Satish Golchha emphasized that the Delhi Police aims to stand as reliable "companions in times of need" for the student community. Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh hailed the pink booth as a powerful symbol of "security, confidence, dignity, and trust" for women on the university campus, reinforcing the institution's commitment to creating a safe educational environment.
