Delhi University Sets May Timeline for 2026 Undergraduate Admissions
Admissions for undergraduate programmes at the University of Delhi are projected to begin in the third week of May 2026, according to official statements provided to PTI on Monday. This schedule is strategically aligned with the commencement of the Common University Entrance Test (UG) 2026, marking a continued effort to streamline the academic calendar.
Centralized CSAS Portal to Manage Admission Process
The university will once again utilize its centralized Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal to conduct admissions. This system operates through multiple phases, starting with the crucial registration stage. The entire admission framework remains closely linked to CUET scores, which serve as the primary determinant for eligibility and subject selection via a structured mapping mechanism.
Registration Window to Open Concurrently with CUET Exams
DU Dean of Admissions Haneet Gandhi confirmed that the registration window is anticipated to open as CUET examinations begin. "The registration process for DU will initiate once the CUET exams commence, so we expect to open the portal for registration around the third week of May," Gandhi told PTI. While specific details are still being finalized, the university's primary objective mirrors last year's focus: completing admissions promptly to facilitate an early start to classes.
As per the National Testing Agency, the CUET-UG 2026 is tentatively scheduled to be held between May 11 and May 31, 2026, providing a clear timeline for aspirants.
University Aims to Compress Admission Cycle Duration
In response to persistent concerns over delayed academic calendars, the university is actively working to shorten the duration of each admission round. "We will endeavor to reduce the allocation period as much as feasible. Even minor adjustments of one or two days per round could yield significant improvements," Gandhi explained to PTI. This initiative addresses criticism from sections of the teaching community regarding prolonged admission cycles that have historically disrupted academic schedules and delayed class commencements.
Enhanced CSAS Portal for Improved User Experience
Alongside timeline optimizations, DU is also enhancing the usability of the CSAS portal. Gandhi highlighted plans to introduce additional prompts and guidance features to minimize errors during the application process. "We will incorporate more prompts to assist students throughout the process, thereby reducing mistakes," she stated. These improvements aim to create a more student-friendly interface, ensuring a smoother application journey for thousands of candidates.
Critical Role of Subject Mapping in Admission Eligibility
The university has reemphasized the importance of subject alignment between Class 12 studies and CUET papers. Gandhi advised students to meticulously select their CUET subjects, noting that a minimum of 50 percent similarity is required for successful subject mapping. This step is pivotal in determining course eligibility and ensuring candidates meet the necessary academic criteria.
With lakhs of aspirants expected to compete for limited seats, the upcoming admission cycle will rigorously test DU's capacity to balance efficiency with accuracy. The university's efforts are geared towards restoring a stable academic calendar, which has faced disruptions in recent years, thereby providing a more predictable and organized framework for future students.
