Lucknow police have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) following an alleged violent clash between day scholars and hostellers on the campus of Lucknow University. The action came on Wednesday evening, after residents of the university hostels staged a protest outside a police outpost located within the varsity premises, demanding justice.
Details of the Campus Assault
The incident that sparked the unrest occurred on December 20. According to the formal complaint, two hostel residents, identified as Mohammad Intisaar and Shailesh Kumar, were reportedly attacked. Both students are in their third year of a BA program.
The alleged assault took place in front of the ONGC canteen on the LU campus. The complainants stated that the two hostellers were beaten with sticks and stones by a group of day scholars. The violence is said to be rooted in an old dispute concerning supremacy and control on the university campus.
Protest Forces Police Action
Following the attack, the hostellers approached the local police to file a formal complaint. They claimed that their initial request to register an FIR was refused by the authorities. This perceived inaction prompted the hostel residents to take their grievance public.
They organized a protest demonstration outside the Lucknow University police post, demanding legal action against the perpetrators. The situation drew the attention of the university administration, with the LU Proctor and other authorities intervening to mediate and help resolve the escalating matter.
FIR Registered, Investigation Underway
The combined pressure from the student protest and university administration led to a reversal in the police's stance. The authorities subsequently agreed to lodge the FIR in connection with the assault case.
Shishir Singh, the in-charge of the LU police post (chowki), confirmed the development. "An FIR has been registered in connection with the assault on Mohammad Intisaar and Shailesh Kumar," Singh stated. He added, "The matter is under investigation, and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure campus safety."
The registration of the FIR marks a critical step in the legal process, but it has also raised broader questions about student security and conflict resolution within the historic university campus.
