Goa Government Announces New Scholarship Scheme for Students with Disabilities
The Government of Goa has officially notified a significant new initiative aimed at supporting students with disabilities in their educational pursuits. The scheme provides a monthly scholarship of over Rs 1,000 as financial assistance to help these students access higher, technical, or professional education.
Eligibility Criteria and Income Limits
To qualify for this aid, students must come from families with an annual income not exceeding Rs 8 lakh. The scheme is inclusive, applying to all categories of disabilities as defined under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Specifically, students with a benchmark disability of 40% or more are eligible to avail the benefits.
Monthly Scholarship Amounts by Education Level
The scholarship amounts vary based on the level of education:
- Class IX to XII students: Will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 900.
- Undergraduate students (BA, BCom, BSc): Are eligible for Rs 1,100 per month.
- Postgraduate and professional course students (MA, MCom, MSc, etc.): Can avail Rs 1,300 monthly.
Additionally, students pursuing music and vocational courses offered by recognized boards of education or universities are also covered under this scheme.
Additional Allowances for Specific Needs
The scheme includes provisions for extra support:
- Reader's allowance for visually impaired students: A monthly payment of Rs 300 to Rs 600, provided the disability is certified by the head of the institution.
- Hostel allowance: Students residing in hostels will receive an additional Rs 400 to Rs 500 per month.
This comprehensive scheme is designed to reduce financial barriers and promote inclusive education for students with disabilities in Goa, ensuring they have the resources needed to succeed in their academic and professional goals.
