In a significant administrative move, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has directed the interim vice-chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, to immediately freeze two contentious decisions made by the university's syndicate. Freezing of Irregular Admissions and Appointments
The governor specifically ordered the suspension of the syndicate's decision to grant admission to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program to a student who had previously failed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) examinations. Additionally, he blocked the syndicate's move to initiate the appointment process for an assistant professor position. These directives were conveyed through a formal letter handed over by the Lok Bhavan secretary to Vice-Chancellor Geetha Kumari.
Details of the Controversial Student Case
The student in question, A Kalesh, had enrolled in the four-year BFA (mural painting) course but failed his examinations in 2005. Despite this academic setback, he was later admitted to the MFA program, which he successfully completed in 2023. At a recent syndicate meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Kumari, the syndicate decided to treat Kalesh's case as special and grant him a BFA degree on the grounds that he had passed the MFA program.
The Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) filed a formal complaint with the governor, alleging that the university admitted Kalesh to the MFA program without properly verifying his BFA marklists. This raised serious questions about academic integrity and adherence to university regulations.
Allegations of Political Pressure and Corruption
The governor's intervention also extended to blocking the syndicate's attempt to expedite faculty recruitment ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The SUCC complaint highlighted this decision, citing a government auditor's report that pointed to overstaffing at the university. Given the institution's severe financial crisis, this move was seen as particularly irresponsible.
The complaint further alleged that Vice-Chancellor Geetha Kumari violated university regulations under pressure from syndicate members affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Adding weight to these allegations, four syndicate members nominated by the governor themselves submitted written complaints about irregularities and corruption at the university.
