Himachal Pradesh University VC Conducts Review of PM VIKAS Project Implementation

In a significant development aimed at bolstering skill-based education, Prof Mahavir Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), recently conducted a comprehensive review of the PM VIKAS project's implementation at the institution. This initiative, part of the Union Government's flagship efforts, focuses on empowering minority communities through targeted skill development, entrepreneurship, and educational support.

Funding and Project Overview

The project has been allocated Rs 79.70 lakh by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, under the PM VIKAS (Pradhan Mantri Virasat ka Samvardhan) scheme. During the review meeting, Prof Singh interacted with the project team, issuing necessary directions and guidance to ensure its effective and timely execution. He commended the dedicated efforts of the team, led by Dr Ramesh Thakur from the Department of Chemistry, for securing this prestigious project for the university.

The VC described this as a major step towards strengthening skill-based education and enhancing employment opportunities for youth, particularly from minority backgrounds. He expressed confidence that the team's commitment would lead to successful project outcomes.

Training and Skill Development Initiatives

Under the PM VIKAS scheme, approximately 300 students from minority communities will receive specialized training in high-demand sectors. The training programs include:

  • Solar photovoltaic site survey assistants
  • Solar PV module manufacturing technicians
  • Certificate accounting technicians (CAT)

These initiatives are designed to equip students with industry-relevant skills, thereby improving their employability in emerging sectors such as renewable energy and finance.

Proposal and Sanction Details

Himachal Pradesh University had initially submitted a proposal amounting to over Rs 1.13 crore for the project. This proposal included provisions for assessment costs and post-placement support for candidates. However, the Centre sanctioned Rs 79.70 lakh, which excludes these specific components. Despite this, the university remains focused on leveraging the allocated funds to maximize impact and ensure comprehensive skill development for the beneficiaries.

The review underscores HPU's commitment to aligning with national initiatives for minority empowerment and skill enhancement, setting a precedent for other educational institutions in the region.
