IIT-BHU Reaches Unprecedented Heights in Global QS Subject Rankings for 2026
Varanasi's Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) has achieved a historic milestone by securing its best-ever performance in the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject for the year 2026. This remarkable achievement highlights the institute's unwavering commitment to academic excellence and groundbreaking research on the global stage.
Significant Expansion and Ranking Improvements Across Disciplines
The institute demonstrated substantial growth, not only by increasing the number of subjects ranked but also by witnessing sharp improvements in their positions. Out of the 14 subjects considered for evaluation, an impressive 13 were ranked, with three disciplines breaking into the top 250 globally and seven securing spots within the top 300 worldwide. Overall, 11 disciplines from IIT-BHU were placed within the top 500, showcasing a comprehensive upward trajectory.
Engineering and Technology Disciplines Lead the Charge
According to an IIT-BHU spokesperson, the engineering and technology subjects performed exceptionally well, with several disciplines climbing over 200 places compared to the previous year's rankings. Civil engineering entered the 201–275 band for the first time, marking a significant debut. Electrical and mechanical engineering secured strong positions within the 201–250 band, while chemical engineering was ranked in the 251–300 band. Materials science also followed suit in the same category.
In a standout achievement, computer science & information systems soared dramatically from the 751–850 band in 2025 to an impressive 251–300 ranking. Additionally, the institute's pharmacy discipline was newly ranked, positioning itself in the 201–250 band. Biological sciences received its first-ever subject ranking, landing in the 651–700 band.
Broad-Based Growth Across Subject Areas
The Engineering & Technology subject area as a whole climbed to a rank band of 332, a substantial leap from last year's 501–550 band. In natural sciences, the institute ranked in the 451–500 band. This growth was reflected across the board, with notable performances in physics & astronomy (rank band 351–400), mathematics (301–350), and environmental sciences (401–450). This exceptional performance underscores the institute's growing global reputation for academic excellence and high-impact research.
QS Ranking Methodology and Institutional Vision
The QS Ranking by Subject assessment is based on five critical lenses: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, h-index, and international research network. These metrics collectively evaluate the quality and impact of an institution's academic and research outputs.
Institute director Prof Amit Patra commented on this achievement, stating, "As we look ahead, our focus will remain on further deepening our research impact, expanding global partnerships and building on this momentum to continue our upward trajectory in the years to come." He extended his congratulations to the faculty members, staff, and students for their collective efforts and contributions, which have been instrumental in gaining this global recognition for IIT-BHU.
