IIT Indore's 17-Year Journey: From Borrowed Classrooms to Academic Powerhouse
IIT Indore: From Temporary Campuses to National Research Hub

IIT Indore Celebrates 17 Years of Academic Transformation

Seventeen years ago, the Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT-I) embarked on its educational journey not within grand architectural marvels, but inside borrowed classrooms and temporary corridors. As the institute commemorates its foundation day on February 17, the remarkable evolution from two rented campuses to a sprawling 501-acre academic city in Simrol stands as a testament to India's growing scientific ambition and institutional resilience.

Humble Beginnings and Strategic Growth

Established in 2009 as part of India's new generation of IITs, the institute initially operated from the Institute of Engineering and Technology at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, under the mentorship of IIT Bombay with Pradeep Mathur serving as founding director. The early days were characterized by improvisation and determination, with faculty and students navigating makeshift laboratories and scattered departments across different buildings.

Faculty member Prashant Kodgire, who taught at the temporary DAVV campus in 2012 and continues at Simrol today, recalls the challenging transition period. "It was a demanding time. We constantly commuted between classrooms, temporary laboratories, and departments spread across various buildings. Space was severely limited, but we managed to make it work," he reflects. "The institute began with just 120 BTech students and has now expanded to approximately 3,400 students across nearly 60 academic programs."

From Foundation Stone to Modern Campus

The vision for permanence took shape early in the institute's history. On February 17, 2009, Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh laid the foundation stone for the permanent Simrol campus, located approximately 25 kilometers from Indore. The decisive transition occurred in October 2015, with full academic operations commencing at the new campus in February 2016. This move replaced improvised spaces with purpose-built laboratories, smart classrooms, and dedicated research infrastructure.

Today, the campus presents a striking contrast to its origins, featuring:

  • Five dedicated research towers
  • Student-run startups and innovation clubs
  • Informal maker spaces extending learning beyond textbooks
  • Modern laboratories and academic facilities

Academic Expansion and National Recognition

The institute's academic growth has been substantial and strategic. From the first convocation in 2013, which saw 101 BTech students graduate alongside a few PhD scholars, the 2025 graduating class has expanded to 813 students across six different programs. This expansion signals both institutional maturity and widening academic reach.

IIT Indore has introduced forward-looking programs in artificial intelligence, data science, sustainability, and space science, aligning its academic direction with India's future technology priorities. The appointment of former ISRO chairman K. Sivan as chairperson of the board of governors in September 2023 further strengthened the institute's connection to national scientific leadership.

Research Excellence and National Rankings

The research momentum at IIT Indore reflects its steady evolution into a significant academic institution. The institute has undertaken over 816 sponsored research projects, secured 115 granted patents, and filed 237 patent applications, demonstrating deepening innovation alongside academic growth.

National recognition has followed this progress. In the NIRF 2025 rankings, IIT Indore achieved:

  1. 27th position overall
  2. 24th rank in research category
  3. 12th place among engineering institutes

These marks represent significant improvement from NIRF 2024, where the institute placed 16th in engineering, 33rd overall, and 27th among research institutions, underscoring its evolving national standing and growing reputation in India's higher education landscape.

Kodgire summarizes the transformation: "The journey has been from temporary labs to dedicated research towers. We have experienced organic growth, and our core strength today is undoubtedly research. The first graduating batch operated largely in makeshift facilities, but today we have established ourselves as a serious academic institution with substantial research output and national recognition."
