IIT Kharagpur Launches Rs 75 Lakh Endowment Fund for Tech Education
IIT Kharagpur's 2001 Batch Seeds Tech Endowment Fund

In a significant move to bolster the future of technology education and innovation, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) has officially launched a new endowment fund. The initiative, named the IIT Kharagpur Tech Junction Endowment Fund, has been kickstarted with a generous seed contribution from the institute's 2001 alumni batch.

A Legacy Gift on a Milestone Anniversary

The launch coincided with the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the 2001 batch's graduation. The alumni marked this platinum milestone by pledging an initial seed amount of Rs 75 lakh to establish the fund. A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the institute and the batch representatives during IIT Kharagpur's recent global alumni meet, cementing the collaboration.

An institute official explained that this contribution is just the beginning. With IIT Kharagpur currently celebrating its own Platinum Jubilee year, the endowment scheme is designed to grow as more alumni batches come forward to contribute. The primary vision is to ensure the long-term sustainability and scalability of programs that focus on democratizing technology education.

Fueling Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship

The core mission of the IIT Kharagpur Tech Junction Endowment Fund is to support the institute's RISE framework—Research, Innovation, Skilling, and Entrepreneurship. The corpus will be managed through professional investments. The annual returns generated will be used perpetually to finance a wide array of talent development initiatives.

These initiatives are set to include:

  • National-level technology competitions.
  • Innovation workshops and hackathons.
  • Early-stage startup grants for student entrepreneurs.
  • Comprehensive talent development programs.

An alumnus from the 2001 batch, who chose to remain anonymous, shared the batch's motivation. The purpose of the seed fund is to empower young minds to harness technology, promote meaningful competitions and research, ignite a passion for solving real-world problems, and support them in establishing their own enterprises.

A Unique Governance Model and Broader Vision

A senior official highlighted that the program's uniqueness lies in its collaborative governance model. The structure is a three-pillar system:

  1. The Office of the Dean (R&D) acts as the custodian of the fund.
  2. Alumni provide ongoing strategic guidance and financial support.
  3. The TSG Technology Secretariat executes the programs using established platforms like Kshitij and the Inter-IIT Tech Meet.

This fund is also strategically timed to ensure the continuity of key projects beyond the current Institute of Eminence funding period. The institute has outlined an ambitious plan to utilize Rs 26.7 crores over the next twelve months under three flagship schemes:

Pre-PG Internship Grants: Aimed at building a robust pipeline of research talent.
Platinum Jubilee Talent Hunt: A nationwide search to identify and showcase innovators.
Young Entrepreneur Grants: To seed startups that address critical national challenges.

The newly created IIT Kharagpur Tech Junction Endowment Fund is poised to become a permanent engine, driving technological advancement and entrepreneurial spirit for generations to come, securing the institute's legacy of innovation well into the future.
