University Leadership Calls for Dialogue and Restraint
In a formal communication addressing the university community, Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee emphasized JU's foundational ideals. He stated that the institution, built on learning, reason, and public service, has historically served as a confluence for diverse cultures, languages, and beliefs. Bhattacharjee urged every stakeholder to express differences through dialogue, empathy, and restraint, while firmly rejecting prejudice and misinformation.
"Academic freedom flourishes only in an environment of mutual respect," he wrote, calling for a reaffirmation of the university's shared commitment to inter-faith harmony and the dignity of diversity. He stressed that conduct both within and beyond the campus must reflect these core values.
The Incident That Prompted the Appeal
The VC's appeal comes in the wake of a protest by some JU English department students on December 24. The students walked onto the convocation stage holding posters that read, "No space for Islamophobia in JU." This demonstration was a response to allegations that two third-year undergraduate students were asked by a professor to remove their hijabs on suspicion of cheating during an examination.
The situation escalated quickly, leading to demands for an official inquiry into the professor's actions and the broader atmosphere on campus.
Institutional Response and Ongoing Probe
In reaction to the allegations and the subsequent protest, the university administration took swift action. A probe panel has been formed to investigate the entire episode thoroughly, examining the circumstances surrounding the professor's request and the students' allegations.
Adding a significant layer to the institutional response, the minorities commission intervened in the matter. The commission suggested that the professor in question should stay away from the campus until the investigation by the panel reaches its conclusion. This recommendation aims to ensure a fair and unbiased probe while maintaining peace on campus.
