Jammu University Panel Suggests Removing Jinnah, Khan, Iqbal from MA Course

University of Jammu Committee Proposes Syllabus Changes for MA Political Science Course

A committee of experts established by the University of Jammu to review the syllabus of the MA Political Science program has made a significant recommendation. The panel has suggested the removal of three prominent historical figures—Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, and Mohammad Iqbal—from the chapter titled 'Modern Indian Political Thought-Minorities and the Nation'. This development follows recent protests and has sparked strong reactions from various political leaders and stakeholders.

Background and Committee Formation

The university constituted this expert committee in response to protests organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Friday. The demonstrations specifically targeted the inclusion of Mohammad Ali Jinnah in the revised postgraduate political science syllabus under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework. According to official sources, during a meeting of the faculty and departmental affairs committee held on Sunday, March 22, participants unanimously resolved to recommend the exclusion of topics covering Jinnah, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, and Iqbal.

The recommendation has now been formally forwarded to the Board of Studies for further consideration. The Board is scheduled to convene an online meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on this matter and decide on the final syllabus revisions.

Political Reactions and Condemnation

The reported recommendation has elicited strong condemnation from several political figures. Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmed Rana, along with a BJP leader, have publicly criticized the proposal. In a post on social media platform X, Minister Rana described the recommendation as "a laughable, anti-scholarly act of intellectual vandalism" and "a deliberate attempt to manufacture ideological bigots rather than nurturing inquisitive citizens." He urged the University of Jammu to cease acting as "a laboratory for historical revisionism."

BJP leader Jahanzaib Sirwal has also demanded reconsideration of the proposal. On Monday, he wrote to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, seeking his intervention in the matter. Sirwal emphasized that "the proposed omission of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Iqbal from the syllabus risks diminishing an important part of India’s intellectual and educational inheritance, which must be preserved for future generations."

ABVP's Stance and Warning

ABVP Jammu and Kashmir secretary Sannak Shrivats articulated the organization's position clearly, stating that teaching about Jinnah and the other two figures was unacceptable. He argued that these individuals were instrumental in propounding the two-nation theory and were responsible for the Partition of India. Shrivats issued a warning, indicating that protests would intensify if the syllabus revisions were not implemented as demanded.

The ongoing debate highlights the sensitive nature of historical curriculum decisions in academic institutions. As the Board of Studies prepares to meet, the final outcome will likely have significant implications for how modern Indian political thought is taught at the University of Jammu.
