Jadavpur University Implements Strict Disciplinary Action Following Campus Incidents

In a decisive move to uphold campus safety and discipline, Jadavpur University in Kolkata has taken stringent measures against students involved in serious misconduct. On Sunday, the university authorities announced the suspension of a fourth-year chemical engineering student from his ongoing eighth semester. This action includes a ban on attending classes, appearing for exams, and entering both the campus and hostel premises. The decision stems from an incident on November 18, 2025, where the student was found guilty of verbal abuse, slut shaming, physical assault, and sexual harassment targeting several students on campus.

Details of the November 18 Incident and Additional Charges

The university formed a panel to investigate the November 18 episode, which revealed disturbing details. According to the panel's report, the suspended student used "abusive, derogatory, sexually coloured, and objectionable language, particularly against female students and members of the arts faculty, in the presence of students and security personnel". Additionally, he physically assaulted male students in two separate instances on that day. The panel noted that four other students—two from production engineering, one from civil engineering, and another from chemical engineering—joined him in initiating violent attacks near Aurobindo Bhavan. Their conduct was described as demonstrating unlawful aggression, intimidation, group violence, wilful disobedience of security and administrative authorities, and gross indiscipline.

Furthermore, the suspended student was also found guilty in a separate incident from September, where another student sustained a head injury, adding to the severity of the charges against him.

Penalties for Six Other Students Accepted by Executive Council

During an Executive Council (EC) meeting, punishments were accepted against six other students involved in these incidents. Among them, four were implicated in the November 18 event, while two others were involved in the September incident. The penalties include:

  • Withholding of results and degrees for periods ranging from six months to a year.
  • Ineligibility for further admission to Jadavpur University.
  • Prohibition from participating in convocation ceremonies.
  • Ban on engaging in any extracurricular activities on campus.

An EC member clarified the specifics: "The main accused—the chemical engineering fourth-year student—has been suspended from all academic activities in his ongoing eighth semester, apart from other penalties. Four fourth-year students can attend classes and appear for exams but their results and degrees will be withheld for six months to a year. Two other students have admitted their mistakes, so their degrees will not be withheld. However, the rest of the punishments are the same for all six."

Immediate Actions and Campus Security Measures

Following the November 18 incident, Jadavpur University had initially debarred four students from the campus pending the completion of the probe. This swift action underscores the institution's commitment to maintaining a secure and respectful environment for all students. The university's response highlights a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and violence, aiming to deter future misconduct and ensure accountability.

The incidents have sparked discussions on campus safety protocols and the importance of disciplinary frameworks in educational institutions. By implementing these penalties, Jadavpur University sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated, reinforcing its dedication to fostering a culture of respect and integrity.
