In a significant development, Lucknow's prestigious King George's Medical University (KGMU) has formally approached the police, seeking legal action against the vice-chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Women's Commission, Aparna Yadav, and her supporters. The university alleges they created major disturbances on its campus, leading to property damage and disruption of academic activities.
Chronology of the Campus Incident
The incident unfolded on Friday around 12:30 pm, shortly after the Vice Chancellor concluded a press conference. According to the official complaint filed at the Chowk police station, a large crowd, reportedly comprising Yadav's supporters, began gathering near the main gate of the VC's office. University officials, witnessing the rapidly swelling crowd and fearing untoward incidents, immediately alerted campus security and local police.
KGMU Vice Chancellor clarified that no prior intimation was received about Yadav's visit. At the time, the VC was engaged in pre-scheduled faculty promotion committee meetings with subject experts nominated by the Governor. As the crowd grew to an estimated 150-200 people, Yadav's vehicle arrived at the VC office gate.
Allegations of Violence and Disruption
The situation allegedly turned aggressive soon after. The crowd began raising slogans against the KGMU administration, creating panic and forcing security personnel, teachers, and staff to seek safer areas. The complaint states that the crowd broke open the door of the Vice Chancellor's chamber, forcibly entered the office, raised slogans, and damaged property.
The commotion had severe repercussions. The official mobile phone of the Vice Chancellor went missing during the chaos. Furthermore, the disturbance disrupted an ongoing MBBS first-year written examination in the hall located above the VC's office, affecting numerous students.
Official Response and Demands for Action
KGMU spokesperson, Professor KK Singh, stated that the matter was immediately reported to the offices of the Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and the Health and Medical Education Minister. Police personnel reached the spot and managed to bring the situation under control after nearly an hour. "The incident disrupted normal administrative functioning," Professor Singh emphasized.
Detailing the charges, KGMU Chief Proctor Professor RAS Kushwaha said the actions amounted to obstruction of government work, damage to public property, misbehavior with women faculty members, disruption of examinations, and creating an atmosphere of fear. The university has formally requested the police to register an FIR and initiate legal proceedings.
Following the incident, Aparna Yadav held a press conference at Brown Hall on the KGMU campus. She raised questions about the alleged mental harassment of women doctors, claimed the administration was not acting strictly on attempted forced conversion cases, and questioned the impartiality of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC).
SHO of Chowk police station, Nagesh Upadhyay, confirmed, "A formal complaint has been received from KGMU authorities and we are looking into it for further legal action."
Condemnation from Teachers and Employees
The KGMU Teachers' Association and the Uttar Pradesh State Employees' Joint Council strongly condemned the incident. They termed it an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the premier medical institution. State Employees Joint Council General Secretary, Atul Mishra, demanded a high-level inquiry by the Chief Minister and Governor, and strict action against the culprits.
Mishra expressed dismay that a woman Vice Chancellor of a national-level institution was allegedly insulted. He warned that if no action is taken, the council, representing 12 lakh state employees, may take a decision that could potentially affect essential services. Teachers' Association Secretary, Professor Santosh Kumar, announced that the body would also hold a peaceful candle march in protest against the incident.
