Kurukshetra University Greenlights Major Budget and Policy Decisions
In a significant development for higher education in Haryana, Kurukshetra University (KU) has approved a substantial budget of approximately Rs 746.62 crore for the upcoming financial year 2026–27. This decision was made during the 290th meeting of the university's executive council (EC), which was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva.
Comprehensive Agenda and Financial Oversight
The executive council meeting, which took place recently, involved in-depth discussions on 14 critical agendas spanning academic, administrative, and financial domains. A key focus was the university's financial health, with the council confirming the minutes from the previous EC meeting held on December 30, 2025. Members expressed satisfaction with the implementation of earlier decisions, highlighting effective governance.
Financial matters were thoroughly reviewed, including:
- Approval of budget estimates for 2026–27
- Revised estimates for 2025–26
- Actual expenditure reports for 2024–25
- Re-appropriation orders
- The audited balance sheet for 2024–25
Additionally, annual audit reports for the years 2021–22 and 2022–23 were presented to the council. Observations from the director of local audit in Haryana were discussed, leading to necessary directives to address any concerns.
Key Policy Approvals and Institutional Changes
One of the standout decisions from the meeting was the in-principle approval for developing a comprehensive Social Media Policy. This framework aims to establish guidelines for students, employees, and other university-associated social media users, ensuring institutional discipline and dignity in the digital space.
The council also approved several personnel and institutional matters:
- Extension of re-employment for retired V N Atri as director of the International Center for Indo-Pacific Studies (ICIPS) for an additional six months
- Empanelment of private doctors and specialists for 2025–26, along with revisions to consultation charges
- Renaming of Amarnath Bhagat Jairam Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Serdha (Kaithal), to Amarnath Bhagat Jairam Government Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Serdha (Kaithal)
Focus on Academic Excellence and Research
To bolster academic standards, the council deliberated on guidelines to incentivize faculty members for quality research and effective teaching. Appropriate decisions were taken to encourage innovation and excellence in pedagogy, reflecting KU's commitment to enhancing educational outcomes.
The meeting also saw the approval of the university's annual report for 2025, providing a comprehensive overview of achievements and challenges. Registrar Prof Virender Pal and other EC members were present, ensuring broad participation in the decision-making process.
