A Prestigious Ceremony at Senate House

The event was held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at the historic Senate House in London. The occasion marked the University of London's Foundation Day, an annual event commemorating the institution's first royal charter granted by King William IV on November 28, 1836. The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering, including students and staff of the University, representatives from its 17 Federation Member institutions, and its global network of Regional Teaching Centres.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, the Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, was one of five distinguished individuals to receive an honorary degree this year. The other honorands included Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Sir Terry Waite, Susannah Schofield MBE, and The Reverend Philip Goff, each recognised for their exceptional contributions in their respective fields.

Recognising Leadership and Philanthropy

In her address during the ceremony, Kavita Reddi, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University of London, elaborated on the reasons for honouring Mr. Birla. She highlighted his outstanding contributions to industry and his profound commitment to philanthropy. Reddi noted that his social initiatives have positively impacted millions of lives and praised his dedication to widening access to quality education, both in India and the United Kingdom. She stated that these values perfectly align with the university's core mission of helping others and recognising the transformative power of education.

Expressing his gratitude, Kumar Mangalam Birla said he was humbled to receive the distinction. He mentioned it was a particular privilege to accept the honour from Princess Anne. As an alumnus of the London Business School, which is a constituent college of the University of London, Birla spoke from personal experience about the university's role in turning ambition into achievement. He emphasised his family's long-held belief that education is the most enduring engine of progress, capable of creating opportunities and reshaping communities. He found it both moving and motivating to be recognised by an institution that embodies these very principles.

A Tradition of Honouring Excellence

The conferment of honorary degrees and fellowships is a central tradition of the University of London's Foundation Day, a practice that began in 1903. Over the decades, this tradition has honoured a myriad of illustrious personalities, including royalty and leaders from various walks of life. The 2025 celebrations continued this legacy, bringing together the university community to honour individuals who have made a significant impact on the global stage.

For Indian students and professionals aspiring to study abroad, this recognition of a leading Indian industrialist at a world-renowned institution like the University of London underscores the global reach and opportunities available in international education.
