NAAC Suggests New Courses, Improvements for Goa University After A+ Grade
NAAC Suggests Improvements for Goa University After A+ Grade

NAAC Proposes Enhancement Roadmap for Goa University Following Historic A+ Rating

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which conferred an A+ grade upon Goa University in July last year—marking the first such achievement in the institution's history—has outlined specific recommendations for further advancement of the state's only government-run university. These suggestions, made public last month, aim to build on the university's recent accreditation success.

Key Recommendations for Academic Expansion

The peer team report from NAAC emphasizes the introduction of new academic programs to align with contemporary demands. Specifically, it advocates for courses in logistics management, supply chain management, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the report encourages Goa University to consider launching programs related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital marketing.

Another significant recommendation is the establishment of a translation centre, leveraging the university's strong faculty base in language studies. The report also urges GU to promote its laboratories and experimental facilities more actively, enabling scientists and researchers at both local and national levels to utilize these resources effectively.

Strengths and Opportunities Identified

According to the NAAC report, Goa University boasts several notable strengths:

  • A sprawling campus exceeding 400 acres of land
  • A remarkable 69.5% female student enrollment
  • A significant proportion of students from rural backgrounds and first-generation learners
  • Research incentives for faculty members
  • Strong foundation in Indian and foreign language studies
  • Quality infrastructure and research facilities

The report further identifies opportunities stemming from the campus's rich biodiversity and high-end laboratories, which could enhance research and academic offerings.

Challenges and Areas for Improvement

Despite its strengths, the NAAC team noted several weaknesses and challenges facing Goa University:

  1. Lower student intake due to the region's smaller population
  2. Limited undergraduate programs offered on campus
  3. Absence of certain disciplines such as geography and physical education
  4. A road passing through the campus creating logistical issues
  5. Limited opportunities for revenue generation through industrial collaborations
  6. Perception of Goa as less conducive to serious scientific pursuits

Significant Progress in Accreditation

The A+ grade represents a substantial improvement from the B++ rating awarded during the previous assessment cycle in 2022. In the latest evaluation, Goa University achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.30, a notable increase from the previous score of 2.86.

The NAAC report acknowledges that GU has implemented most recommendations from prior assessments. Notable achievements include the adoption of five villages for community outreach programs and full compliance with the National Education Policy (NEP) across all university programs.

Infrastructure and Governance Highlights

The assessment team commended several aspects of campus management, including:

  • Ample security measures ensuring student safety
  • Disability-friendly facilities promoting inclusivity
  • Effective waste management systems supporting environmental sustainability

The NAAC evaluation comprehensively covered multiple criteria: curriculum design, teaching-learning methodologies, research and innovation activities, infrastructure quality, student support services, governance structures, and institutional best practices.
