The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Goa is set to expand its academic offerings with the introduction of three new Master of Science (MSc) programmes starting from the upcoming academic year. These programmes will be available in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, each with an intake capacity of 20 students. The courses are designed to span a duration of two years, providing in-depth knowledge and research opportunities in these core scientific disciplines.

Expansion and Infrastructure Development

Prof Omprakash R Jaiswal, the director of NIT Goa, highlighted that the institute's new campus, which it moved to in 2024, has been meticulously planned to accommodate a student strength of 1,250. Currently, the institute hosts 1,100 students, and with the addition of two batches from the three new MSc programmes, the total student count is expected to increase by 120. This expansion underscores NIT Goa's commitment to enhancing its educational infrastructure and capacity to foster academic excellence.

11th Convocation Ceremony Highlights

On February 6, NIT Goa will hold its 11th convocation ceremony, where 216 students will be awarded degrees. This includes 162 BTech, 30 MTech, and 24 PhD degrees. Prof Jaiswal emphasized that awarding 24 PhDs is a significant achievement, particularly among newly established NITs, reflecting the institute's growing research prowess.

Distinguished Guests and Alumni Recognition

The convocation will feature a keynote address by Padma Vibhushan awardee Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India. Additionally, Viresh Vazirani, an alumnus from the 2016 batch and founder of Growth Gravy, will be honoured as a guest. This recognition of alumni achievements highlights the institute's strong network and contributions to the professional world.

Impressive Placement Records

NIT Goa has demonstrated robust placement outcomes in the recent academic year. A total of 108 firms visited the campus for recruitment drives. Undergraduate students secured placements with a maximum pay package of Rs 21.6 lakh per annum and an average package of Rs 8.10 lakh per annum. Notably, several students were selected by public sector undertakings such as BPCL.

For MTech students, the average cost to company (CTC) stood at Rs 16.4 lakh per annum, with the highest CTC reaching Rs 22.9 lakh per annum. These figures underscore the high demand for NIT Goa graduates in the job market.

Research and Innovation Milestones

The institute has made significant strides in research and development, securing 56 projects worth nearly Rs 41 crore. Additionally, 22 patents have been granted, showcasing its innovative capabilities. A notable achievement includes NIT Goa's role as a SPOKE under the Centre's ANRF PAIR programme, where it received a research project valued at Rs 6.3 crore in collaboration with IIT Bombay. This interdisciplinary initiative, with total funding support of Rs 100 crore, will focus on critical areas such as industry 4.0, energy, and sustainability.

Faculty Contributions and External Projects

In the last academic year, three faculty members were awarded three R&D projects, including a grant of Rs 25 lakh under Isro's NISAR-UP programme. These accomplishments highlight the institute's active engagement in cutting-edge research and its ability to attract prestigious external funding.

Community Engagement and Regional Development

Prof Jaiswal reiterated NIT Goa's dedication to contributing to the Goa region. The institute has submitted a proposal to develop skills and build capacity among ITI students in various sectors. Furthermore, at least 1,000 high school students have visited the campus to enhance their knowledge and exposure to science and technology, fostering a culture of learning and innovation from an early age.

With these new academic programmes, strong placement records, and impactful research initiatives, NIT Goa is poised to strengthen its position as a leading institution in technical education and regional development.
