NSUI Achieves Landmark Victory in Patna University Student Union Elections

In a significant political shift, the National Student Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, has delivered a strong performance in the Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU) elections. The results, announced late Saturday night, saw NSUI-backed candidates clinch the crucial posts of president and general secretary, marking a notable comeback in student politics.

Historic Win After Four Decades

According to PUSU records, this victory is particularly historic as NSUI has won the president’s post after a gap of approximately 42 years. The last NSUI candidates to hold this position were Shambhu Kumar Sharma in 1984 and Anil Kumar Sharma in 1980. This year, NSUI candidate Shantanu Shekhar was elected president, defeating his nearest rival Prince Kumar of Chhatra JD(U) by a substantial margin of 1,496 votes. Shekhar secured 2,896 votes compared to Kumar's 1,400.

Key Positions and Vote Margins

In addition to the presidency, Khushi Kumari of NSUI won the general secretary post, defeating Pratyush Raj of Chhatra RJD by 553 votes. Meanwhile, the student wing of the ruling BJP, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which had dominated the top positions last year, secured the posts of joint secretary and treasurer this time. Abhishek Kumar of ABVP was elected joint secretary with 2,173 votes, defeating his rival by 422 votes, while Harshvardhan of ABVP won the treasurer position. The vice-president’s post was claimed by independent candidate Shifat Faiz, who won by a narrow margin of 71 votes.

Political Context and Reactions

This outcome comes despite the Congress party's poor performance in the state assembly elections held in November, where it won only six seats in the 243-member House. Expressing satisfaction over the PUSU results, Congress leader and former NSUI president Prem Chandra Mishra stated that students of Patna University have recognized the current ruling dispensation's actions as detrimental to their interests, citing issues like merit exploitation and prolonged unemployment. “They have developed faith in the leadership of Rahul Gandhi,” Mishra emphasized.

Gender Representation and Party Performance

Despite an increase in female voters, only two women secured key posts in this year's elections. Notably, no candidates from the student wings of RJD or JD(U) managed to win any positions, highlighting a shift in student political allegiances. The elections underscore the dynamic nature of campus politics in Bihar, with NSUI's resurgence signaling potential changes in broader political landscapes.
