Patna University Dissolves Current Student Union, Announces Fresh Election Schedule
In a significant administrative move, Patna University has officially dissolved the Patna University Students' Union (PUSU) that was elected for the 2024-25 academic session. This decision comes alongside the announcement of a fresh election schedule for the union for the 2025-26 session, marking a new chapter in student governance at the historic institution.
Official Notification and Legal Basis
The dissolution was formally communicated through a university notification issued on Tuesday by the dean of students' welfare, Y K Verma. The notification explicitly states that "the PUSU (2024-25) is hereby dissolved" in accordance with specific statutory provisions.
This action is based on clause 15(b) and 15(c) of the PU statute for students' union, which was framed under Section 44(2) of the Patna University Act, 1976. These statutes have been amended up to date and received approval from the governor's secretariat, providing a solid legal foundation for the decision.
Fresh Election Schedule Announced
Simultaneously, PU vice-chancellor Namita Singh unveiled the detailed schedule for the upcoming PUSU elections. The electoral process will follow a structured timeline designed to ensure transparency and student participation.
- The draft electoral roll will be uploaded on the official Patna University website on February 6.
- The final electoral roll will be published on February 10.
- Polling for the elections will take place on February 28.
Chief election officer Shankar Kumar confirmed that the elections will cover five key leadership positions within the student union:
- President
- Vice-President
- General Secretary
- Joint Secretary
- Treasurer
In addition to these executive roles, elections will also be held for council members, ensuring comprehensive student representation across various departments and faculties.
Historical Context and Election Framework
The last elections to the Patna University Students' Union were conducted on March 29, 2025. The upcoming electoral process will adhere to the university statutes that are based on the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.
The Lyngdoh Committee guidelines have become a standard framework for student union elections across Indian universities, emphasizing democratic principles, fair practices, and the prevention of malpractices. By following these recommendations, Patna University aims to conduct elections that are both credible and representative of the student body's will.
This development highlights the university's commitment to maintaining robust student governance structures while ensuring compliance with established legal and procedural norms. The dissolution of the previous union and the announcement of fresh elections reflect the dynamic nature of student leadership and the importance of periodic democratic renewal within academic institutions.
