Patna University Finalizes Electoral Roll for Upcoming Student Union Elections

The final electoral roll for the Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU) elections, set to take place on February 28, was officially released on Tuesday. This crucial document confirms that nearly 20,000 students are eligible to participate in the democratic process to elect their representatives for the upcoming academic year.

Accessibility and Transparency Measures

Patna University's chief election officer, Shankar Kumar, emphasized the university's commitment to transparency by announcing that the electoral roll will be uploaded to the official university website. This move aims to ensure easy and convenient access for all students, allowing them to verify their eligibility without hassle.

Kumar detailed the preparatory steps, noting that the draft electoral roll was initially published on February 6. Following this, a window for corrections was open from February 7 to February 9, during which students could submit applications to address any discrepancies in their voter registration details.

Nomination Process and Guidelines

The sale of nomination papers, priced at Rs 50 each, is scheduled to commence at 10 am on February 11 and will continue until 3 pm on February 14. Along with the nomination forms, students will receive a comprehensive 16-page booklet. This booklet outlines the general guidelines and the code of conduct that must be adhered to during the student union elections, ensuring a fair and orderly electoral process.

During this same period, prospective candidates will have the opportunity to obtain a 'certificate of no academic year' from the office of the examination controller. This certificate is a mandatory requirement for those seeking to run for office, verifying their academic standing.

Election Structure and Representation

Polling on February 28 will be conducted to elect office-bearers for five key positions: president, vice-president, general secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer. In addition, 24 councillors will be elected from various constituent units of the university, ensuring broad representation across different colleges and faculties.

Kumar explained the unit-wise distribution of councillor posts, which is designed to reflect student enrollment numbers. The allocation is as follows:

  • Patna Women’s College: 5 councillors
  • Magadh Mahila College: 3 councillors
  • B N College: 2 councillors
  • Patna College: 2 councillors
  • Patna Science College: 2 councillors
  • Vanijya Mahavidyalay: 1 councillor
  • Patna Law College: 1 councillor
  • Women’s Training College: 1 councillor
  • Patna Training College: 1 councillor
  • College of Art and Crafts: 1 councillor
  • Faculty of Social Sciences: 2 councillors
  • Faculty of Humanities: 1 councillor
  • Faculty of Science: 1 councillor
  • Faculties of Commerce, Law, and Education: 1 councillor

Kumar highlighted that the representation ratio is set at one councillor for every 1,000 students, ensuring proportional representation based on student population across the university's diverse units.
