Patna University Emulates Oxford Tradition with Presidential Debate Ahead of Student Union Polls

In a move inspired by the historic practices of Oxford and Cambridge universities from the late 19th century, Patna University (PU) is set to host a presidential debate for all candidates vying for the top position in the Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU). This initiative aims to provide a common platform for candidates to articulate their agendas for reforms and development, fostering a transparent and democratic electoral process on campus.

Event Details and Format

The presidential debate is scheduled for 1 PM on February 25 at the Patna Women’s College grounds. Each candidate will be allocated five to ten minutes to present their ideas and vision for the student body. The event will be attended by the vice-chancellor, along with all senior officials and teachers of Patna University, underscoring the institution's commitment to academic involvement in student governance.

Shankar Kumar, the chief returning officer for PUSU, highlighted the significance of this tradition. "The practice of holding presidential debates in union elections was introduced at PU in 2012 by then Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh. Since its inception, it has been a staple in every election cycle, promoting a healthy democratic system and encouraging informed voting among students," he stated.

Enhanced Engagement and Broadcast

To maximize reach and participation, the debate will be telecast live on Patna University’s official channel. Kumar also made a fervent appeal to all eligible students, urging them to exercise their right to vote on February 28 at their designated polling booths. In a bid to boost voter turnout, PU has announced a special incentive: all students who cast their votes will be awarded a day’s attendance, recognizing their civic engagement.

Nomination Statistics and Election Timeline

The nomination process for the student union elections concluded on Wednesday, with a significant number of students filing for various positions. Key posts saw robust competition, with nominations including:

  • President: 16 candidates
  • Vice-President: 9 candidates
  • General Secretary: 9 candidates
  • Joint Secretary: 8 candidates
  • Treasurer: 9 candidates

Additionally, 54 nominations were submitted for the 22 councillor positions, representing different constituencies within the university. The election timeline proceeds with the scrutiny of nominations set for February 19, followed by the withdrawal of nominations on February 21. The final list of candidates will be published on the same day, setting the stage for the upcoming polls.

Code of Conduct Violations Reported

Amidst the electoral preparations, incidents of misconduct have surfaced. According to the chief returning officer, volunteers from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) forcibly entered Patna Women’s College on Wednesday afternoon. They carried banners and raised slogans in support of their candidates, actions that reportedly showed little regard for the established code of conduct, potentially disrupting the peaceful electoral environment.

This presidential debate not only revives a time-honored academic tradition but also reinforces Patna University’s dedication to nurturing democratic values and active student participation in governance, mirroring global educational benchmarks.
