Patna University Student Union Elections Mired in Uncertainty
Confusion continues to cloud the Patna University Students Union (PUSU) elections, slated for February 28, as the university's official notification postponing the polls remains in force. This stands despite mounting student protests and claims that the elections will proceed as originally planned.
Official Notification Still Active
The Patna University website continues to display the notification deferring the elections until further orders. No fresh or signed notification has been formally issued to restore the original schedule, leaving the electoral process in a state of limbo.
Final Decision Pending After Candidate Discussions
Chief returning officer Shankar Kumar stated that a final decision on conducting the PUSU elections will be made on Monday. This decision will follow discussions with all candidates contesting various posts, as listed in the final roster issued after scrutiny and withdrawal periods.
Postponement Announced Amid Code of Conduct Violations
The university announced the postponement of the polls on Saturday, citing "utter violation of code of conduct" and alleged indecent behavior by students towards teachers. Shortly after this announcement, a group of students reportedly gheraoed the PU office, pressuring authorities to withdraw the postponement order and hold the elections as scheduled.
Informal Assurance Lacks Official Weight
Amid the tense situation, dean of students' welfare Y K Verma wrote on a piece of paper that the elections would be held as planned. However, this note did not carry the signature of the chief returning officer for the PUSU elections. In the absence of a duly signed notification, the official status of the elections remains unchanged, adding to the prevailing uncertainty.
Candidates to Provide Reassurances on Conduct
Kumar indicated that candidates will be asked to reassure university authorities that there will be no further violations of the code of conduct during campaigning. "If it is decided to hold the elections as scheduled, all the contestants would have to complete their campaigning within the remaining period," he added, highlighting the tight timeline and heightened scrutiny.
The situation underscores the challenges in balancing electoral processes with disciplinary concerns in higher education institutions, as stakeholders await a clear resolution.
