Pondicherry University Implements Revised Academic Schedule
Pondicherry University has officially clarified that its newly revised academic schedule has been implemented with the primary goal of safeguarding students' academic progress and future opportunities. In a detailed statement issued by the university's public relations officer, Ruman Banerjee, the institution emphasized that this strategic move is designed to restore the traditional academic cycle, ensuring that the 'even semester' concludes smoothly in the month of April.
Restoring the Academic Rhythm Post-Pandemic
Following the significant disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the academic calendar at Pondicherry University experienced unavoidable deviations and delays. The university is now taking proactive steps to return to its original rhythm, a decision made after careful consideration to better serve the broader interests of academic excellence and research continuity. By ensuring the timely completion of all academic activities by April, the university aims to facilitate the prompt declaration of results. This initiative is intended to empower students to pursue placement opportunities and apply for higher studies without any unnecessary delays.
Key Measures to Maintain Academic Hours
The university has also clarified that there has been no reduction in the total number of working days. To compensate for any potential loss of valuable academic hours, Saturdays have been officially designated as working days. Additionally, a few extra classes, including online sessions, have been introduced to ensure comprehensive academic coverage and support for all students.
Student Backlash Over LPG Crisis and Workload
However, the Students Federation of India, Pondicherry University unit (SFI PU), has strongly criticized the university's clarifications, accusing the administration of ignoring pressing issues such as the LPG crisis on campus. In a pointed statement, SFI PU highlighted that university officials have failed to address the severe shortage of cooking gas, which has led to price hikes, the closure of canteens, and a reduction in mess menu items. The statement further noted that several faculty members have acknowledged the existence of this LPG shortage, exposing what they describe as a contradiction in the administration's stance.
SFI PU Statement Condemns Administration
According to SFI PU, the university's clarification does little to resolve student concerns; instead, it reveals what they term as a "spineless, inconsiderate administration unwilling to take responsibility and admit its failures." The students' forum argues that this move is merely an attempt to mask the university's shortcomings while students continue to bear the brunt of the consequences.
Increased Academic Pressure on Students
Students are reportedly burdened with continuous classes, laboratory sessions, internal assessments, and dissertation work, all while weekends are being converted into working days. Saturdays are now designated as regular working days, and Sundays have been transformed into a mix of online classes and, for some students, even offline classes and examinations. This intensified schedule has sparked significant discontent among the student body, who feel overwhelmed by the additional academic demands.
