Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh is all set to host its 73rd annual convocation ceremony, reinforcing a significant cultural shift by continuing its emphasis on traditional Indian attire over Western academic regalia. The event is scheduled for December 13 at the university's gymnasium hall.
Embracing Tradition: Phulkari Jackets and Dress Code
Marking the second consecutive ceremony of its kind, PU will once again replace the conventional Western-style gowns with vibrant ethnic Phulkari jackets. This move solidifies a policy first introduced earlier this year, aiming to give the convocation a distinct regional and cultural identity.
Students will be required to hire these jackets for Rs 120 per set, along with a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,000. The jackets will be available from stalls set up near the gymnasium. A colour code has been established: red jackets are designated for DSc, DLitt, and PhD awardees, while saffron jackets are for all undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) candidates.
The general dress code mandates white or off-white Indian wear. For boys, this means a kurta pyajama, while girls should opt for a salwar suit or sari. As an alternative, white Western formals with beige trousers will also be permitted. Accessories like turbans for boys and dupattas for girls must also be in white or beige shades.
Mandatory Rehearsal and Strict Entry Protocols
The university has made attendance at the mandatory rehearsal on December 12 at 10 am a non-negotiable condition. Absence from this rehearsal will lead to disqualification from attending the main convocation ceremony.
On the day, students must carry their identification card attested by a competent authority. Entry to the venue will be restricted to Gate No. 3 only. In a bid to maintain decorum and security, a list of prohibited items has been issued. Mobile phones, handbags, cameras, water bottles, umbrellas, and helmets will not be allowed inside the gymnasium hall. Candidates have been advised to make personal arrangements for storing their belongings securely.
Ceremony Discipline and Degree Distribution
Discipline during the ceremony is paramount. Candidates must occupy their seats one hour before both the rehearsal and the main event. A roll call will be conducted, and students who fail to sign the attendance will not receive their degrees during the ceremony.
Furthermore, once seated, students will not be permitted to leave the hall until the entire academic procession has exited after the ceremony concludes. The university notice also clarifies that any discrepancies found in the degree certificates should only be reported after the ceremony is over, to avoid any disruption to the proceedings.
This detailed set of instructions underscores PU's commitment to a smooth, dignified, and culturally resonant convocation, firmly establishing the Phulkari jacket as its new ceremonial symbol.
