Panjab University Establishes New Department and Launches BSc in Forensic Science & Criminology

In a significant academic development, Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh has officially launched a new undergraduate program in forensic science and criminology. This initiative follows the university's decision to upgrade its existing Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology into a full-fledged, independent department operating under the honours school system.

Aligning with India's Evolving Legal Framework

The introduction of this program is strategically timed to align with recent, sweeping changes in India's criminal laws. These legislative updates place a much stronger emphasis on the role of forensic investigation, particularly in cases involving serious offences. This shift has created a rapidly growing, nationwide demand for professionally trained forensic experts across various law enforcement and investigative agencies.

Program Details and Admission Criteria

The newly launched BSc programme in Forensic Science and Criminology will admit a total of 30 students per academic year. Admissions will be conducted exclusively through the Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduates (CUET-UG).

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have studied the following subjects at the senior secondary level (Class 12):

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Either Biology or Mathematics

Strengthening Forensic Capacity and Justice System

University officials have stated that the primary objective of this new academic offering is to strengthen national forensic capacity. By producing a steady stream of highly skilled graduates, the program aims to directly support and enhance the efficiency of India's criminal justice system. The move underscores PU's commitment to addressing critical skill gaps in a field that is becoming increasingly vital for modern law enforcement and judicial processes.
