Sanskrit University's Ambitious 2026-27 Budget Charts Path for Green and Digital Future

The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit has unveiled its comprehensive budget for the financial year 2026-27, presenting a forward-looking blueprint that emphasizes environmental sustainability, digital modernization, and academic expansion. The budget document was formally presented by finance committee convener and syndicate member K Premkumar on Tuesday at the university's main campus located in Kalady, Kochi.

Major Academic and Infrastructure Initiatives

The university is poised to introduce several new academic programs as part of its growth strategy. A significant highlight is the launch of a four-year integrated BA–BEd teacher education programme, which has received approval from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). This program will offer 50 seats and is scheduled to commence in the upcoming academic year. Additionally, the institution plans to roll out foreign language courses and new generation academic offerings to broaden its curriculum.

On the infrastructure front, the budget allocates substantial resources for technological upgrades. Five advanced smart classrooms will be established, while existing digital classrooms will undergo comprehensive enhancements to improve the learning environment. The university also commits to creating model women-friendly rooms in all campus buildings, ensuring inclusive and accessible facilities for all students and staff.

Green Campus Vision and Financial Framework

In a landmark move toward environmental stewardship, the budget proposes the formation of a dedicated green audit team. This team will oversee projects aimed at transforming Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit into Kerala's first carbon-neutral university. The initiative reflects a growing commitment to sustainable practices within higher education institutions.

Financially, the university estimates total revenue of Rs 165.85 crore against projected expenditures of Rs 177.19 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year, resulting in a deficit of Rs 11.34 crore. Strategic allocations within the budget prioritize key areas of development and support.

Detailed Budget Allocations and Strategic Investments

The budget outlines specific funding for various critical sectors:

  • Research and Scholarships: Rs 3 crore has been earmarked for research fellowships, while Rs 60 lakh is allocated for Sanskrit encouragement scholarships to promote the study of the ancient language.
  • Technology Infrastructure: A significant investment of Rs 1.5 crore is designated for IT infrastructure and server upgrades, enhancing the university's digital capabilities.
  • Academic Resources: The library development fund receives Rs 1 crore, matched by an equal allocation for establishing an online learning center to support remote education.
  • Additional Provisions: Funds have also been set aside for organizing academic seminars, campus development projects, museum expansion efforts, and sports activities, ensuring holistic institutional growth.

This budget represents a strategic effort to balance fiscal responsibility with ambitious plans for academic excellence, technological advancement, and environmental leadership in the coming years.
