Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Greenlights New Forestry and Horticulture University in Gorakhpur
The Uttar Pradesh state cabinet, in a significant move on Tuesday, granted approval for the establishment of the Uttar Pradesh University of Forestry and Horticulture in Gorakhpur. This landmark decision marks a major step forward in the state's commitment to environmental education and sustainable development.
Substantial Investment and Land Allocation
The new university will be constructed with a substantial investment of Rs 491 crore. It will occupy approximately 50 hectares of land located in the Campierganj area of Gorakhpur. The Yogi Adityanath government had already earmarked an initial allocation of Rs 50 crore for this project in the state budget presented earlier this year, demonstrating a phased financial commitment to this ambitious educational initiative.
Academic Programs and Disciplinary Focus
As the fifth university in Gorakhpur, this institution is set to offer a comprehensive range of academic programs, including:
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees
- Master of Science (MSc) degrees
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs
- Specialized diploma courses
The curriculum will encompass a diverse array of modern disciplines, with a strong emphasis on:
- Forestry and agroforestry
- Horticulture and fruit cultivation
- Wildlife conservation and biodiversity
- Climate change studies and mitigation
- Natural resource management
- Social forestry practices
- Garden cultivation techniques
Strategic Objectives and Environmental Impact
The primary objectives of the university are multifaceted and forward-looking. It aims to significantly increase forest cover across Uttar Pradesh while strengthening biodiversity conservation efforts. The institution will provide modern training and education to both farmers and students, equipping them with contemporary skills in agriculture and environmental sciences. Furthermore, it is designed to promote advanced research in critical areas such as sustainable agriculture, environmental protection, and ecological balance.
This university will hold the distinction of being the first forestry university in North India and only the second such institution in the entire country. Government officials have expressed confidence that this decision will provide a new direction to green development, enhance food security, and improve environmental equilibrium within the state.
Historical Context and Location Significance
The selection of Campierganj in Gorakhpur as the site for this university is particularly noteworthy. Prior to this approval, the Uttar Pradesh government had established the world's first vulture conservation and breeding centre, known as the Jatayu centre, in the same Campierganj area. During the inauguration of this conservation centre on September 6, 2024, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath publicly announced plans to open a forestry university in the immediate vicinity.
The Gorakhpur forest division subsequently identified 50 hectares of land adjacent to the Jatayu conservation centre and expedited all necessary procedural preparations to facilitate the university's establishment. This strategic location creates a unique synergy between conservation efforts and academic research.
Employment Opportunities and Future Prospects
Vikas Yadav, the Divisional Forest Officer of Gorakhpur, highlighted the broader implications of this project. He emphasized that the university plans to offer degree and diploma courses not only in traditional forestry but also in specialized fields like agroforestry, social forestry, and horticulture. This diverse academic offering is expected to create extensive job opportunities for young people across various sectors, including environmental management, agricultural research, conservation biology, and sustainable development.
The establishment of the Uttar Pradesh University of Forestry and Horticulture represents a transformative investment in the state's educational infrastructure and environmental future. It positions Gorakhpur as a emerging hub for ecological studies and sustainable practices in North India.
