UPES University Unveils Major Scholarship Initiative for Women in Dehradun

In a significant move to promote women's education and leadership, Dehradun-based UPES University has announced a groundbreaking scholarship program titled "1,000 Women – 1,000 Dreams." This initiative will provide full tuition fee waivers for the university's Online MBA program to 1,000 women across India, aiming to expand access to higher education and professional development.

Strategic Launch Ahead of International Women's Day

The scholarship program has been strategically launched in anticipation of International Women's Day on March 8, reflecting the university's commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment. According to university officials, this initiative seeks to support women from diverse professional and social backgrounds who are looking to advance their careers through quality management education.

Detailed Scholarship Distribution and Focus Areas

The 1,000 scholarships have been carefully allocated across three key categories to ensure broad impact and targeted support:

  • 300 scholarships for armed forces families: This category includes serving women personnel of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as spouses and daughters of both serving and retired defence personnel.
  • 250 scholarships for technology and start-up sectors: These are specifically designed for women working in technology companies and start-up environments, addressing the global underrepresentation of women in these fields.
  • 450 scholarships for nationwide applicants: The remaining scholarships will be open to women applicants from across India, including eligible female staff members of UPES University itself.

University Leadership's Vision and Commitment

UPES Vice-Chancellor Sunil Rai emphasized that the program is designed to support women seeking career advancement through management education. "This initiative represents our deep commitment to creating equal opportunities for women in higher education and professional leadership," Rai stated. "By removing financial barriers, we hope to empower 1,000 women to pursue their dreams and contribute significantly to India's economic growth."

Building on Previous Empowerment Initiatives

According to a university communique, this new scholarship program extends UPES's ongoing efforts to support defence families and promote women's leadership through academic programs. The university previously launched "Project Shakti" in 2020 as part of its women's empowerment initiatives, which aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal on gender equality.

The dedicated scholarships for women in technology and start-ups are particularly noteworthy, as they directly address the persistent gender gap in these sectors globally. University officials noted that these targeted scholarships aim to increase female participation in fields that are crucial for India's digital transformation and innovation economy.

This comprehensive scholarship initiative represents one of the largest women-focused educational programs announced by an Indian university this year, potentially setting a benchmark for other institutions to follow in promoting gender-inclusive higher education opportunities.
