Vijayawada: A lightweight handwoven silk saree measuring 5.5 metres but weighing just 200 grams was offered to Goddess Kanaka Durga at the Indrakeeladri temple on Tuesday.
Artisan's Masterpiece
Crafted by Sirisilla-based handloom artisan and Chenetha Kala Ratna awardee Nalla Vijay Kumar, the saree features an intricate Ikat design and can be folded to fit inside a matchbox.
Vijay Kumar, from Rajanna Sirisilla district in Telangana, presented the saree to temple executive officer V K Seena Naik. The artisan said he spent about a week weaving the saree on a traditional loom.
Inspiration and Recognition
He said the creation was inspired by his father, late handloom craftsman Nalla Parandhamulu, and aimed to highlight the skill and innovation of Sirisilla weavers.
Temple officials lauded the craftsmanship, stating that such unique creations help promote traditional handloom art. Seena Naik urged people to support indigenous crafts and handloom products.
Vijay Kumar had earlier garnered attention for weaving a special shawl that was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
