Anubhav Sinha Opens Up About Creative Challenges in Making 'Assi'

Director Anubhav Sinha has candidly discussed the significant creative obstacles involved in crafting his upcoming social drama 'Assi'. The film features Taapsee Pannu in the role of a determined lawyer advocating for a sexual assault survivor, portrayed by Kani Kusruti. Sinha's revelations shed light on the intense process behind this hard-hitting project.

Trailer Sets Grim Tone with Alarming Statistics

The recently released trailer for 'Assi' immediately establishes a somber atmosphere by highlighting a distressing reality. It references the shocking statistic that approximately 80 rape cases are reported daily across India. Reflecting on this grim number, Sinha emphasized the urgency of the issue in a recent interview.

"That translates to one case every 20 minutes. By the time you complete this interview, another incident would likely have occurred," the director stated, underscoring the pervasive nature of sexual violence in society.

Confronting Patriarchy and Societal Silence

With 'Assi', Sinha aims to challenge the deeply entrenched patriarchal systems that perpetuate sexual violence. He argues that the problem extends beyond individual criminal acts to represent a broader systemic failure inherited through generations.

"Mothers often warn their daughters about potential sexual violence from as young as 13, advising them on how to cope. However, men rarely educate their sons about gender equality. We fail to teach them that while attraction is natural, violating another person's body is unacceptable," Sinha explained, highlighting the societal imbalance in preparing youth.

Writing from a Female Perspective: The Toughest Challenge

Sinha collaborated with screenwriter Gaurav Solanki on the screenplay, acknowledging that both faced inherent limitations as male creators. They consciously strived to approach every scene from a woman's viewpoint, which Sinha described as the most difficult aspect of the writing process.

"Every time Gaurav and I sat down to write a scene, we attempted to think like women. This was exceptionally challenging for me. I immersed myself in films centered on women to better understand their experiences and emotions," he shared, revealing the depth of their commitment to authenticity.

Why Taapsee Pannu Was the Ideal Choice

The decision to reunite with Taapsee Pannu after previous collaborations like 'Mulk' and 'Thappad' was deliberate and thoughtful. Sinha believed she would bring genuine sincerity to the role rather than mere professional ambition.

"I encounter many actors who want to be in my films because they feel it's expected. That approach doesn't resonate with me. With Taapsee, you can see the honesty in her eyes. She truly embodies her characters," the director praised, noting their successful history of tackling sensitive social issues together.

Continuing a Legacy of Issue-Driven Cinema

Through 'Assi', Sinha continues his tradition of creating cinema that confronts uncomfortable societal truths while spotlighting resilient female characters. The film not only narrates a survivor's journey but also critically examines the cultural attitudes that enable such violence to persist.

This project is positioned as one of Sinha's most powerful and impactful works to date, promising to provoke necessary conversations about gender, justice, and systemic change in contemporary India.
