Ariela Barer Steps Into 'Deep Cuts' Role Amid Representation Controversy
Ariela Barer, acclaimed for her role in The Last of Us, has officially joined the cast of A24's upcoming film Deep Cuts, replacing Odessa A'zion. This casting change comes after significant backlash and public discourse regarding representation in Hollywood, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Character Background Sparks Initial Criticism
The controversy centered on the character Zoe Gutierrez, a central figure in Holly Brickley's 2023 novel that serves as the film's source material. In the book, Zoe is explicitly described as half Mexican and half Jewish. When Odessa A'zion was initially cast in this role, it drew criticism from audiences and industry professionals who argued that the casting did not align with the character's ethnic background.
Barer confirmed her involvement in the project through her Instagram Stories, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity. "SO excited to be a part of this special project with such special people," she wrote. Additionally, she showed support for A'zion, stating, "A genuine major shoutout to @odessaazion for always leading with integrity and being an absolute real one for as long as I've known her."
Odessa A'zion's Departure and Explanation
In late January, Odessa A'zion announced her decision to step away from the project after gaining a deeper understanding of Zoe's character background. "Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie... I'm OUT," she declared on Instagram.
A'zion later provided further context, explaining that she had originally auditioned for the role of music critic Percy, which will be portrayed by Cailee Spaeny opposite Drew Starkey. Instead, she was offered the part of Zoe. "I hadn't read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting," she admitted, thanking fans for bringing the issue to her attention.
Industry-Wide Response and Open Letter
Following the casting controversy, more than 100 Latino actors, artists, and storytellers united to sign an open letter advocating for greater inclusion and opportunities for Latino talent within the Hollywood industry. Notable signatories included prominent figures such as Eva Longoria, John Leguizamo, and Xochitl Gomez.
The open letter highlighted systemic issues, stating in part, "Recent casting decisions around the character Zoe Gutierrez in A24's 'Deep Cuts' have exposed a troubling pattern. The absence of Latina audition opportunities, and the choice to replace a clearly Latina character with a non-Latina actress, signals a broader, ongoing erasure of our community from the stories that define our culture."
Film Details and Production Team
Deep Cuts is set in the 2000s and is described as a compelling love story that follows two music-obsessed twenty-somethings as they navigate themes of ambition, belonging, and adulthood over a transformative decade.
The film is written, directed, and produced by Sean Durkin. The production team includes producers Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie, Anthony Katagas, Jordan Tappis, and A24. Adding to the creative ensemble, Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and producer Blake Mills will compose the original music for the film.
This casting update and the surrounding discussions underscore ongoing challenges and conversations about diversity and accurate representation in the entertainment industry, particularly in high-profile projects like those from A24.
