Bhumi Pednekar Breaks Silence on 'The Lady Killer' Commercial Disaster
In a candid revelation, Bollywood actor Bhumi Pednekar has finally addressed the controversy surrounding the film 'The Lady Killer', widely regarded as one of the most significant commercial failures in recent Indian cinema history. Pednekar admitted that the theatrical version audiences witnessed was drastically different from the project she initially signed on for, leaving her emotionally shaken and professionally uncertain.
A Drastically Altered Final Product
During an exclusive conversation with Mid-Day, Bhumi Pednekar reflected on the troubled production, disclosing that a substantial portion of the script was never actually filmed. She described the entire ordeal as one of the most distressing phases of her entire career, emphasizing how the final released product bore minimal resemblance to the complete narrative originally envisioned by the creative team.
"The script that we read was complete, but a large part of it was never filmed. What released was an incomplete film," Pednekar stated. "I wish I had known better. Maybe if I was a part of the system, I could have manoeuvred things differently. I was in shock. I kept wondering what was happening because nothing like this had ever happened before. Eventually, I told myself this was a learning experience."
Significant Unshot Content and Emotional Fallout
According to the actor's detailed account, approximately 35 percent of the film remained unshot, yet the production makers proceeded with its theatrical release. This controversial decision left Pednekar grappling with intense confusion and profound disappointment, unsure about how to navigate her career path forward. The emotional toll, she confessed, was exceptionally deep and lasting.
"It was a very heartbreaking time in my life. I felt finished. I didn't know how to recover from it," Bhumi shared. "It's still a khichdi in my head about who was responsible. I keep wondering whether I contributed to it or someone else did. But it was a decision the makers took at that time, which they felt was right. It was also a period when the industry had not fully recovered from the pandemic. It was just a mess."
About 'The Lady Killer' and Its Commercial Performance
Directed by Ajay Bahl, 'The Lady Killer' also featured actor Arjun Kapoor in a prominent role. The film opened with extremely limited screenings across select metro cities and struggled immensely to attract audiences. Mounted on a reported budget of Rs 45 crore, it earned a mere Rs 60,000 on its opening day and concluded its theatrical run in under one week with total collections below Rs 1 lakh. With no OTT platform buyers emerging, the film was eventually made available for free viewing on YouTube.
In the aftermath, director Ajay Bahl acknowledged the film's unfinished state in an online comment, writing that "it's no surprise that the film feels choppy and disjointed and one finds it hard to connect with the characters." He later retracted this statement, clarifying it had been misinterpreted.
Bhumi Pednekar's Recent Projects and Career Move
Most recently, Bhumi Pednekar was seen in the crime thriller series 'Daldal', which premiered on Prime Video last month. The show also stars Aditya Rawal, Samara Tijori, Geeta Agrawal, Chinmay Mandlekar, and Sandeep Kulkarni. In the series, Pednekar portrays DCP Rita Ferreira, a determined police officer tasked with tracking a serial killer whose psychological profile mirrors her own. This intense role marks another deliberate attempt by the actor to explore darker, more complex characters following the significant professional setback of 'The Lady Killer'.
