This trend sees actors transitioning from mere performers to strategic investors, seeking greater control over intellectual property and direct engagement with audiences.

Celebrity Investments in Emerging Platforms

Prominent examples include actor Rana Daggubati, who has invested in the regional OTT service Chai Shots, and Pankaj Tripathi, who earlier joined audio streaming platform Velvet as co-founder. These ventures represent a calculated gamble in an already saturated market, where numerous streaming services compete for viewer attention.

Experts acknowledge the inherent risks, noting that such investments require significant time and patience before monetization becomes viable. However, the potential rewards are substantial, offering actors unprecedented control over stories and formats, particularly in niche segments like audio content and short-form video.

The Strategic Advantage of Star Power

Chandrashekar Mantha, partner and media and entertainment sector leader at Deloitte India, explains the rationale behind these moves. "In an increasingly cluttered OTT landscape, several prominent stars have ventured into launching their own platforms, driven by the strategic advantage of brand-led distribution," he states.

Mantha emphasizes that these initiatives prioritize direct audience engagement over immediate scale. By leveraging their inherent brand equity, celebrities can keep customer acquisition costs relatively low while building credibility and visibility for their platforms in a crowded marketplace.

Beyond Performance: Building Digital Ecosystems

The value proposition extends far beyond traditional acting roles. Dr Rashmi Jain, associate professor at K J Somaiya Institute of Management, highlights how OTT platforms enable actors to shift from being talent-for-hire to becoming intellectual property owners and franchise builders.

Despite the advantages, significant challenges exist. Charu Malhotra, co-founder and managing director of Primus Partners, cautions that running a platform requires fundamentally different skills than performing.

The potential upside, however, can be significantly higher if a platform builds a loyal niche or becomes acquisition-worthy.

As the OTT ecosystem expands beyond subscription models to include advertising video-on-demand, free ad-supported streaming, and various bundling options, celebrity-backed platforms are finding new avenues for growth. Format diversification—including short series, cinematic audio stories, podcasts, and regional-first content—creates additional opportunities for niche players.
