Book Claims Meghan 'Brainwashed' Harry, Details Royal Rifts

Explosive Royal Biography Alleges Meghan Markle 'Brainwashed' Prince Harry

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are the central subjects of a provocative new book by veteran royal author Tom Bower, according to an extensive excerpt serialized by The Times. The book, titled Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Future of the Royal Family, makes a series of contentious claims about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's relationship with the monarchy and their life after stepping back as senior royals and relocating to California.

Queen Camilla's Alleged 'Brainwashing' Remark

In one of the most striking assertions, Bower writes that Queen Camilla confided to a friend that Meghan had "brainwashed" Harry. The author describes a profound shift in Harry's personality and behavior, which he attributes to Meghan's influence following their growing grievances with royal protocols.

"Meghan had become a divisive agent. To please her, Harry was ignoring his old friends. He even changed his telephone number without informing his family," Bower states. "The jovial lad about town became possessed by seeking revenge. Increasingly, his character mirrored Meghan's. Emotionally, he veered towards extremes. Simple dislikes transformed into passionate hatred. 'Meghan's brainwashed Harry', Camilla reportedly told a friend."

Confrontational Meeting with William and Kate

The excerpt details a tense meeting at Kensington Palace in 2018, shortly after Harry and Meghan's honeymoon. Described as peace talks that quickly escalated, the encounter allegedly involved Prince William and Princess Kate. Bower notes that William's skepticism of Meghan was evident even before the engagement, with the Prince of Wales cautioning Harry about the rapid pace of his relationship with "the American actress." This suspicion was reportedly shared by Kate.

According to the biography, the discussion grew heated, culminating in Meghan snapping at William: "If you don't mind, get your finger out of my face."

Harry's Fears Over William's Future Reign

Bower further claims that Harry was deeply unsettled by Prince William's reaction to the arrest of their uncle, Prince Andrew. William's firm support for King Charles's decisions—including stripping Andrew of titles and removing him from Royal Lodge—reportedly intensified Harry's anxieties about his own royal standing.

"Rightly, Harry fears that the future King William could remove all the Sussexes' titles and effectively banish him from Britain," Bower writes. "Whether Meghan understands the potential consequences of any deliberate aggravation of the Prince and Princess of Wales remains to be seen."

Criticism of Los Angeles Wildfire Response

The book also scrutinizes the couple's humanitarian efforts. It references their visit to Los Angeles in January of last year during devastating wildfires, where they met victims and distributed essentials at a soup kitchen. However, Bower asserts the gesture was widely mocked as a publicity stunt.

"After recording a video of her listening and hugging victims, the scene was posted that day by publicists to Meghan's 1.6 million Instagram followers," Bower writes. "Instead of receiving credit for her efforts, Meghan was ridiculed as an attention-seeking pseudo-royal." The author quotes filmmaker Justine Bateman, who labeled the couple "disaster tourists" and "ambulance chasers."

Alleged Exploitation of the Invictus Games

A significant portion of the excerpt focuses on the Invictus Games, the international sporting event for wounded veterans founded by Prince Harry. Bower alleges that Meghan harnessed the platform for personal acclaim, and that both she and Harry were difficult for organizers to manage.

"Meghan needed a global stage for genuine admiration and cheering fans. To her good fortune, Harry agreed that she could star at the Invictus Games," Bower claims. He details that Meghan insisted on being addressed as "Ma'am" and Harry as "Sir" during the event in Canada, according to organizers.

The book also cites concerns from former Invictus Foundation chief Dominic Reid that the Games had devolved into "the Harry and Meghan show," overshadowing athletes and their families with meticulously staged photo opportunities. It mentions allegations of poor attendance and crowd "padding" for media coverage.

Speculation on the 2027 Invictus Games and Royal Reconciliation

With the 2027 Invictus Games scheduled for Birmingham, Bower suggests Harry hoped for King Charles to open the event, viewing it as a potential public gesture of reconciliation. However, the author is skeptical, noting the ongoing family feud and the risk of protests.

"Considering all the damning words and lies spoken and written by the Sussexes against the royal family since 2021, and the enormous damage caused by the Sussexes' exploitation of their royal titles, the chance of the King irritating the Prince and Princess of Wales to please the Sussexes is, in spring 2026, remote," Bower writes. He concludes that such a meeting would be a high-stakes gamble with minimal upside for the monarchy.

Sussexes' Firm Rebuttal

Shortly after the serialization was published, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex issued a strong statement condemning Bower's work. The representative criticized the author for crossing "the line from criticism into fixation" and constructing "elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met."

The statement further referenced Bower's past comments about the monarchy needing to "obliterate" the Sussexes, asserting: "Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him."
