The Real-Life Hero Behind the Character
Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, born on July 17, 1945, in Ludhiana, Punjab, was deeply inspired by his father, who served in the IAF and retired as an Honorary Flight Lieutenant. Growing up in a village near the IAF base Halwara, Sekhon developed a lifelong fascination with aircraft and the Air Force. This passion led him to make a pivotal decision: he left his engineering course midway to join the IAF, where he was commissioned as a fighter pilot on June 4, 1967.
After completing his rigorous training, Sekhon joined the prestigious No. 18 Squadron, famously known as the "Flying Bullets," in October 1968. During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, he flew Gnat jets, also referred to as HAL Ajeet, and demonstrated exceptional bravery in combat.
The Heroic Sacrifice That Earned the Param Vir Chakra
On December 14, 1971, a formation of six enemy Sabre aircraft launched a sudden attack on the Srinagar Airfield. Initially, Sekhon was unable to take off due to dust clouds obscuring the runway. However, as soon as visibility cleared, he immediately took to the skies, engaging two of the attacking Sabres despite being heavily outnumbered.
Flying at treetop height, Sekhon fought valiantly in an intense aerial combat. Tragically, his aircraft was brought down, and he lost his life in the process. His courageous actions forced the enemy aircraft to withdraw, successfully defending Srinagar and preventing further assault on the town and airbase. For his extraordinary valor, Sekhon was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, becoming a symbol of unwavering bravery and sacrifice.

Despite earlier rumors suggesting he might be dropped from the film after sharing screen space with a Pakistani actor, producer Bhushan Kumar of T-Series confirmed that Dosanjh remained an integral part of Border 2.
